Chapter 5 - Whispers in the Ledger

Victoria felt an icy chill settle at the base of her neck. ""What was your mother’s name, Maya?"" The little girl’s voice barely rose above the hum of the apartment's heating vents. ""Elena. Elena Rivera."" Victoria froze, her breath catching in her throat. The name struck her like a physical blow. Elena Rivera had not been a stranger; six years ago, she had been a brilliant lead research accountant at Vance Global Logistics—Victoria’s late husband’s multinational shipping empire. Elena had vanished without a trace overnight along with millions of dollars in encrypted company bonds, an incident that nearly drove the Vance family business into federal bankruptcy.

Victoria had spent years assuming Elena was a traitor who fled overseas with illicit fortunes. Yet here sat Elena’s starving daughter, begging for dinner scraps in a downtown restaurant, wearing clothes pulled from roadside dumpsters. Nothing aligned with the corporate narrative Victoria had accepted for half a decade. ""Did your mother ever talk about a place called Vance Global?"" Victoria probed, careful not to betray the sudden tremor in her voice. Maya shook her head, but then reached inside the pocket of her soaking wet t-shirt, which sat on the floor beside the couch.

Maya extracted a small, water-damaged silver locket on a broken chain. Her fingers worked the rusted hinge, popping it open to reveal not a portrait, but a tiny microchip tucked tightly into the recessed cavity where a photograph should have been. ""Mom told me never to lose this,"" Maya said, her eyes welling with fresh moisture. ""She said if bad men ever came, this had the names of the people who bought our family."" Before Victoria could reach for the silver trinket, the penthouse lights suddenly flickered and snapped off entirely, plunging the room into absolute darkness.
