Chapter 12 - The Iron Cage

Federal marshals and naval intelligence officers swarmed the stranded Gulfstream within seconds, their tactical flashlights slicing through the downpour like laser beams. The cabin door of the private jet was forced open from the outside, and two federal agents entered with weapons drawn.

Moments later, Victoria Vance was led down the airstrip steps in handcuffs.

Her immaculate blonde hair was plastered to her skull by the rain, ruining the aristocratic perfection she had maintained for decades. The multi-strand pearl necklace around her neck swayed awkwardly against her drenched black evening dress. When she reached the tarmac and saw Gabriel standing beside Elena, her pale face contorted with venomous hatred.

"You ungrateful mongrel!" Victoria hissed, spitting at Gabriel’s boots. "I raised you! I made this family what it is! Your father was weak, your grandfather was a senile fool, and you were supposed to die at sea!"

Gabriel looked down at the woman who had shared his blood, but felt nothing. No anger. No sorrow. Only the absolute detachment of an executioner reading a final verdict.

"My father died of an unexplained heart attack two weeks after signing the maritime charter over to you," Gabriel said, his voice cutting through the wind. "And my ship was sabotaged using security codes that only you and Ricardo possessed. You didn't raise a family, Victoria. You operated a syndicate."

Marcus stepped forward, displaying a thick red binder bearing the presidential seal of the Naval Investigative Service. "Victoria Vance, by order of the Federal Court and the Judge Advocate General, you are under arrest for high treason, conspiracy to commit murder, kidnapping of a minor heir, and corporate fraud exceeding four billion dollars."

Victoria sneered, glaring toward the federal agents. "My lawyers will have me out on bail before the morning edition goes to print! You have no proof! Everything Ricardo did was on his own initiative!"

"Ricardo already signed a full confession," Marcus countered with a cold smile. "In exchange for a transfer out of federal maximum security, he gave up your encrypted accounts, your offshore bank coordinates, and the audio recordings of you ordering Dr. Croft to terminate Gabriel’s infant."

Victoria’s knees buckled. The arrogant sneer vanished, replaced by the hollow, sickening dread of total ruin. She turned her wild eyes toward Elena, who stood holding little Arthur under the shelter of an agent's umbrella.

"Elena... please," Victoria pleaded, her voice dropping into a desperate whimper. "You know what it's like to be an outsider in this family. Tell him to drop the charges. I will give you everything. Half of the offshore trust is yours!"

Elena walked forward, stopping just inches from the woman who had beaten her and left her to die in a locked cellar. Elena reached out, her fingers closing around the pearl necklace at Victoria’s throat. With a sharp, sudden snap, the silk thread broke.

Dozens of priceless pearls scattered across the rain-slicked runway, bouncing into the dark puddles and washing away into the tarmac drains.

"You don't own this family anymore, Victoria," Elena said, her voice steady and absolute. "And you will never see my son again."

The marshals shoved Victoria into the back of a waiting transport van, the heavy steel doors slamming shut with a final, echoing clank.
