Chapter 3 - Safe Harbor

The safehouse was a dilapidated fisherman’s cottage tucked along the foggy inlets of Black Rock Bay, thirty miles south of the Vance family estate. Rain hammered against the tin roof, creating a steady, rhythmic drone that masked the sounds of the outside world.

Gabriel placed Elena gently onto the worn sofa. He retrieved an emergency medical kit from beneath the floorboards, working with silent, surgical efficiency. He cleaned the cuts along her shoulder with antiseptic, his jaw clenched so tightly the muscles knotted beneath his stubbled cheeks. Every wince she made felt like a physical blow against his chest.

"They told me your ship sank," Elena whispered, her voice hollow as she watched his focused eyes. "Victoria brought me the official admiralty telegram. She said you drowned trapped inside the engine room. She staged an empty casket funeral in the cathedral. When I refused to surrender your personal journals and passcodes... that's when Ricardo began locking the doors."

Gabriel wrapped clean gauze around her shoulder, tying it off with steady hands. "My submarine was sabotaged, Elena. The oxygen regulators were rigged. Someone on the inside transmitted our patrol coordinates to an unmarked mercenary vessel. I survived five days on a life raft before being picked up by an allied black-ops cutter."

Elena’s eyes widened with fresh terror. "Ricardo didn't just steal your wealth... he tried to murder you in cold blood."

"Not just Ricardo," Gabriel said grimly, looking down at his phone. The cryptic message still glowed on the screen: The boy is not dead.

"Elena," Gabriel’s voice softened, but a deep tremor ran beneath it. "Before the ambush... you said they forced you to sign a custody waiver. For our unborn child. What did you mean?"

Tears instantly flooded Elena’s bruised eyes, spilling over her lashes. She clutched the lapels of his naval tunic, burying her face against his chest. "I was pregnant when you deployed, Gabriel. You didn't know yet... I wanted to tell you the day you returned. But eight months ago... Ricardo took me to a private clinic. When I woke up, the doctors told me the baby was stillborn. They wouldn't even let me see him."

Gabriel felt the ground crumble beneath his feet. The breath left his lungs as if he had taken a direct torpedo strike. He stared at the glowing phone screen in his hand. The boy is not dead.

"He lied," Gabriel murmured, the horrifying realization clicking into place like the mechanism of a bomb. "They stole my son."

Suddenly, the headlights of an approaching vehicle swept across the rain-slicked blinds of the cottage window. Gabriel drew his sidearm, positioning himself between Elena and the door.

A heavy knock rattled the wooden frame—three slow raps, followed by two fast ones. A military cadence.

Gabriel cracked the door an inch, weapon leveled at chest height. Standing on the porch was a tall, stoic man in a soaked trench coat, water dripping from the brim of his cap. It was Captain Marcus Vance, Gabriel’s estranged uncle and the former Chief of Naval Intelligence.

"Lower your iron, nephew," Marcus said in a grave, weathered voice. "If I wanted you dead, I wouldn't have brought the hospital ledger."
