Chapter 4 - The Phantom Heir

Marcus stepped inside, shedding his dripping coat and tossing a thick manila folder onto the rustic dining table. His gaze drifted to Elena, and his rugged face softened with genuine remorse. "I am sorry, Elena. I was out of the country when Victoria enacted her purge. Had I known she would go this far, I would have intervened sooner."
Gabriel kept his weapon at low-ready, his instincts refusing to stand down. "You sent that message to my phone, Marcus. What do you know about my child?"
Marcus pulled out a chair, sighing heavily as he sat. "Six months ago, Victoria paid twenty million dollars to Dr. Adrian Croft, the chief of obstetrics at St. Jude's Private Pavilion. The official medical record lists a stillborn male infant, cremated within twelve hours due to biological hazard protocols."
Elena gasped, a strangled sound catching in her throat.
Marcus slid the folder open, spreading glossy black-and-white documents across the table. "Dr. Croft retired the following week and purchased an offshore villa in the Caymans. But the neonatal transfer logs don't lie. A healthy baby boy was checked out through the basement service bay forty minutes after Elena was placed under general anesthesia. He was delivered directly to an exclusive boarding facility in the northern mountains—Saint Michael’s Orphanage, an institution funded entirely by the Vance Family Trust."
Gabriel leaned over the table, staring at the blurred surveillance snapshot stapled to the ledger. It showed an infant wrapped in a blue blanket, carried by a woman in a clinical coat into an unmarked black SUV.
"Why?" Gabriel’s voice was dangerously calm, the calm of an approaching hurricane. "Why keep him alive at all? If Victoria wanted total control of the estate, an heir is a liability."
"Because of your grandfather’s will," Marcus revealed, tapping the ledger. "Old Arthur Vance despised Victoria and didn't trust Ricardo with a single cent. The patriarch left sixty percent of the conglomerate’s voting stock directly to your firstborn legitimate child. If you died without issue, the estate passed to Ricardo. But if an heir existed, Victoria and Ricardo could only act as legal guardians—milking the trust indefinitely without liquidating the company."
"They needed him alive to control the empire," Elena said, her voice shaking with righteous fury. "They took my baby and treated him like a corporate signature!"
"Exactly," Marcus said. "And now that Gabriel has miraculously returned, that boy is no longer an asset to Ricardo. He is a death sentence. The moment Ricardo realizes Gabriel survived tonight’s raid, he will move to erase the boy permanently."
Gabriel walked to the window, watching the rain lash against the dark harbor waters. His son was out there, alone, guarded by mercenaries in an isolated mountain fortress, unaware of the war raging around his existence.
"Where is the facility?" Gabriel asked, turning back with eyes as cold as arctic ice.
"Three hours north, near Crestview Peak," Marcus replied, pulling a digital keycard from his pocket. "Guarded by a dozen heavily armed private contractors. But Gabriel... you have a bigger problem right now."

Marcus turned on the small television in the corner of the safehouse. The screen flickered to life, showing breaking news from the metropolitan police. Ricardo’s face appeared beside Gabriel’s official naval portrait.
A news anchor spoke urgently: "Police have issued a shoot-on-sight warrant for Commander Gabriel Vance, who reportedly went rogue after suffering combat trauma, attacking Vance Manor and kidnapping his sister-in-law, Elena Vance. Federal authorities consider him armed and extremely dangerous."
