Chapter 8 - A Mother's Vow

Elena fell to her knees beside the crib, her hands trembling so violently she could barely touch the soft rail. Tears welled up in her bruised eyes, streaming down her cheeks and dripping onto the carpet. For eight agonizing months, she had lived inside a nightmare, mourning a phantom child while suffering abuse at the hands of monsters.
Now, the child was here. Alive. Breathing.
She reached into the crib, sliding her hands gently beneath the baby’s small body. The infant stirred, his tiny fingers curling around her thumb as she lifted him to her chest. He had Gabriel’s deep, intense eyes, opening sleepily to look up into the tearful face of his mother.
"My baby..." Elena sobbed softly, burying her nose into the soft skin of his neck. "My sweet, beautiful boy... Mama is here. Mama has you."
Gabriel stood over them, his broad frame casting a protective shadow. For the first time since his return from the dead, the iron mask of the stoic commander cracked. A tear traced down his sunburnt cheek as he placed his hand over his son’s tiny back. The boy possessed the Vance family crest birthmark on the back of his right shoulder—a faint, triangular mark that no forged document could ever counterfeit.
"His name is Arthur," Elena whispered, looking up at Gabriel. "After your grandfather. The only man who ever stood up for us."
"Arthur," Gabriel repeated softly, leaning down to press his lips against the baby's forehead. "He will never fear anyone again. I swear it on my life."
Suddenly, the wail of approaching helicopter rotors shattered the peaceful silence of the room. The vibrations rattled the glass panes of the high nursery windows. Searchlight beams swept aggressively across the ceiling, casting long, frantic shadows across the walls.
"Commander, we have incoming!" Leo’s urgent voice crackled through Gabriel's comm piece, heavily distorted by interference. "The two choppers just landed on the north lawn! It’s not just security... Ricardo Vance is on the ground! He brought twenty heavy contractors with him!"
Gabriel moved instantly to the window, peering through the blinds. On the landscaped front lawn of the orphanage, two luxury executive helicopters sat with their rotors spinning down. Disembarking from the lead bird was Ricardo Vance, dressed in a long wool overcoat, flanked by a squad of private security forces carrying heavy assault weapons.
Behind Ricardo walked Dr. Adrian Croft, holding a steel medical case.
"They aren't here to guard him," Gabriel said, his voice turning deadly cold. "Croft is here to administer a lethal injection. They came to wipe the slate clean."
Ricardo walked toward the main entrance of the orphanage, gesturing violently to his lead mercenary. "I want the whole VIP wing swept! If the baby is still breathing, finish it! If Gabriel is inside, burn the building to the ground!"

Gabriel turned to Elena, securing a tactical infant carrier across his own chest, strapping little Arthur securely against his armored vest. He checked the ammunition of his rifle.
"Elena, stay right behind me," Gabriel ordered, his eyes glowing with predatory fury. "We don't negotiate with monsters. We put them down."
