Chapter 1 - The Cold Drive into the Dark

The gravel driveway crunched beneath the heavy tires of the black sedan as it rolled through the towering wrought-iron gates of the Sterling estate. Clara did not look back in the rearview mirror. She kept her palm pressed against the gentle swell beneath her wool coat, feeling the faint, rhythmic flutter of life inside her. The contrast was suffocating: inside her body bloomed warmth and promise, while outside, the world had reduced itself to freezing drizzle and the bitter memory of Julian’s voice telling the security staff to ensure she was escorted off the premises.
Beside her on the leather seat sat her single cream duffel bag. Five years of marriage, five years of enduring subtle insults from her mother-in-law Eleanor, and months of pretending she didn’t notice Julian’s late-night meetings with Victoria—all packed neatly into thirty pounds of canvas. Arthur, the elderly chauffeur who had served the Sterling family for three decades, glanced at her through the rearview mirror. His lined face was etched with silent apology. He had turned the heater on high before she even reached the vehicle, but no amount of hot air could chase the chill from Clara's marrow.
""Where would you like me to take you, Mrs. Sterling?"" Arthur’s voice broke the silence, soft and hesitant.
Clara winced at the name. It felt like wearing a pair of shoes that had grown two sizes too small and sheared away her skin. ""Just the bus terminal, Arthur. Somewhere in town where I can find a room for the night.""
""The terminal, madam? But in your condition—and Mr. Sterling’s accounts..."" Arthur trailed off, swallowing hard. He knew better than anyone that Eleanor had already ordered the finance manager to freeze every joint credit card Clara held before the front door had even swung shut.
""I have enough cash in my bag to pay for a modest motel and a ticket out of this state,"" Clara whispered, her knuckles whitening over her clutch. ""I will not ask for a single penny that belongs to a Sterling. Not for me. Not for my child.""
Arthur gripped the steering wheel, his eyes swimming with helpless sympathy. ""Mr. Julian has lost his senses, ma'am. That woman has poisoned him. But you have always been good to us. Please... take my emergency umbrella and this jacket from the trunk before you leave.""

Clara managed a faint, fragile smile, nodding her gratitude. As the sedan merged onto the slick interstate leading toward the city center, Clara watched the blurred amber streetlamps bleed across the passenger window. She took a shuddering breath and promised herself that tonight would be the absolute last night she ever shed tears for Julian Sterling. He had made his choice on the front portico, holding Victoria’s waist while Eleanor watched with smug triumph.
Suddenly, the sedan lurched violently to the right with a deafening screech of shredded metal. Clara was thrown forward against her seatbelt as blinding high-beams flooded the cabin from an oncoming black SUV that showed no intention of stopping.
