Chapter 12 - The Architect of Ruin

They spent the remainder of the night in the Blackwood cabin working beneath the yellow glow of a solitary kerosene lamp. Clara sat before Julian's old dust-covered laptop, her fingers flying across the keys with the precise mathematical genius she had buried for half a decade.
Beside her, Julian pulled dusty corporate ledgers from the floorboards of the study, matching account numbers to Clara's decrypted files. With every document decrypted, Julian’s former self began to reassemble—not the arrogant playboy of his twenties, but a sobered, focused executive who realized he was fighting for the only piece of genuine innocence he had ever contributed to the world.
Jax stood watch by the front porch with a rifle resting across his knees, the rain gradually turning to early morning sleet.
""Look at this transaction,"" Clara pointed to the glowing screen, showing Julian a multi-million-dollar offshore diversion executed three days before her expulsion from the mansion. ""Victoria’s signature appears alongside Eleanor’s power of attorney. They didn't just siphon company funds; they pledged the trust fund intended for your direct heir as collateral for a high-risk hedge fund.""
""The fund collapsed last winter,"" Julian whispered, his jaw clenching so hard a muscle twitched beneath his skin. ""Eleanor was using the child’s existence to trigger an emergency clause in the grandfather’s trust. Under Section 14, if an heir is born, twenty million dollars in liquid treasuries automatically unlock to ensure the child’s upbringing.""
""She didn't want my son,"" Clara said, her voice dropping into an icy register. ""She wanted the liquidity to cover her fraud before the federal marshals knocked on her door.""
""She won't touch him,"" Julian swore, turning to Clara with a look of absolute conviction. ""I will sign a full affidavit granting you sole legal and physical custody. I will forfeit all parental claims if that's what it takes to keep him safe from the family name.""
Clara looked into Julian's eyes. For the first time, she saw no deception, no vanity, only the raw humility of a father realizing the weight of his sins.
""You won't forfeit your claims, Julian,"" Clara said quietly. ""If you forfeit them, Eleanor’s lawyers will claim you are unfit and petition for secondary conservatorship as next of kin. You have to stand in that courtroom tomorrow, look your mother in the eye, and acknowledge your son before the state.""
A gentle knock sounded at the cabin door. Jax pushed it open slightly.
""Clara,"" Jax murmured. ""The boy is awake. He's asking for you.""

Clara stood up and walked to the porch. Leo was standing wrapped in his blanket on the top step, rubbing his eyes against the gray dawn. He looked past his mother, his gaze settling on the tall, gaunt man who had stepped out onto the porch behind her.
Leo tilted his head, his hazel eyes narrowing with instinctive curiosity. ""Mom... is that the man from the old photo?""
