Chapter 13 - The Confrontation in Manhattan

The morning sun reflected off the towering glass facades of lower Manhattan, painting the streets in cold shades of slate and gold. Outside the New York County Surrogate Court, luxury sedans lined the curb.

Eleanor Sterling stepped out of her limousine, dressed in an impeccable charcoal wool coat, a string of ancestral pearls resting at her throat. Beside her walked Victoria Vance, clad in an expensive designer suit, clutching an embossed leather briefcase. Eleanor’s face was a mask of supreme confidence. Her private security detail flanked them as they ascended the wide marble steps.

""Did Miller secure the boy?"" Eleanor asked coldly, not breaking her stride.

""Miller lost contact in upstate New York last night,"" Victoria admitted in a husened whisper, checking her phone nervously. ""He said Jackson interfered.""

Eleanor scoffed, waving her gloved hand with dismissive disgust. ""Jackson is a vagrant biker with no money and no legal standing. Clara has no attorney and no resources. The judge has been on the Sterling payroll since Julian’s grandfather built the library wing. Once the emergency order is signed today, the marshals will pick the child up wherever they hide. Julian is too drunk to even know what day it is.""

They entered Courtroom 302. The courtroom was empty save for the court clerk, the state magistrate Judge Abernathy, and Eleanor's team of five high-priced litigators sitting at the plaintiff’s table.

""Your Honor,"" Eleanor’s lead counsel stood, bowing slightly. ""We are ready to present the ex-parte emergency petition regarding the minor child Leo Sterling. The biological mother has unlawfully concealed the heir to avoid legal accounting, and the biological father is incapacitated.""

""Incapacitated according to whom, Mother?""

The heavy mahogany doors at the back of the courtroom swung open with a resounding thud.

Eleanor turned sharply, her expression freezing in mid-air.

Walking down the center aisle was Julian Sterling. He wore a clean, pressed dark suit, his hair cut sharp, his eyes clear and burning with ferocious resolve. Beside him walked Clara, elegant and poised in a tailored beige overcoat, her head held high with untouchable dignity.

Behind them stood Jackson Sterling, his towering frame clad in a formal leather jacket, holding five-year-old Leo securely by the hand. The boy walked with his chin up, his scuffed sneakers squeaking softly against the polished marble floor.

""Julian?"" Eleanor gasped, losing her composure for a fraction of a second. ""What is the meaning of this charade? You belong in medical treatment!""

""I belong here, Eleanor,"" Julian said, his voice echoing off the high plaster ceilings with commanding force. ""Standing between my son and the woman who tried to destroy him.""
