Chapter 8 - The Shadow at the Window

Jax didn't waste a heartbeat. He scooped Leo up by the waist with one arm, shielding the boy against his heavy leather vest, and reached behind the counter to grab a heavy steel tire iron he kept beneath the register.

""Brenda, lock the kitchen exit and call nobody,"" Jax commanded in a voice that left no room for debate.

The patrons in the diner froze, noticing the sudden change in atmosphere. Jax’s road companions—men who had ridden with him for decades—quietly set down their mugs, their eyes shifting toward the front windows.

Outside, the doors of the black sedans swung open simultaneously. Four men in tailored gray raincoats and dark ties stepped onto the wet asphalt. They were not street thugs; they carried the cold, bureaucratic posture of corporate security operatives tasked with high-value extractions. Two moved toward the driver’s side of Clara’s truck, while two advanced directly toward the diner’s glass entrance.

Clara sat behind the steering wheel, her breath coming in rapid, shallow bursts. Her hand rested on the door handle, but she knew running on foot across an open lot against four trained men was suicide. Instead, she reached into her glove box, retrieved the encrypted microdrive, and slipped it into the lining of her boot.

The diner door swung open with a harsh chime of the brass bell. The lead operative stepped inside, shaking raindrops from his lapel. His sharp, clinical gaze scanned the counter until it locked onto Jax and the boy held tightly against his ribs.

""Jackson Sterling,"" the operative said smoothly, producing a laminated legal folder from his breast pocket. ""My name is Miller. We represent Eleanor Sterling and the estate's family trust. We have a temporary protective custody order issued by the state supreme court regarding the minor child, Leo Sterling.""

The name echoed through the diner like a curse. Leo Sterling.

""He doesn't carry that name,"" Jax replied, his voice dropping into a lethal register. ""And you're standing on private property with paperwork bought from crooked judges. Turn around and walk out before you leave on a stretcher.""

Miller smiled thinly, entirely unimpressed by the intimidation. ""Mr. Sterling, you've been absent for twenty years. You have no legal standing. The mother is outside, currently being served with grand jury subpoenas for grand larceny regarding company property taken five years ago. This child belongs in the care of his rightful guardians.""

Through the window, Clara saw the other two men gripping the door handle of her truck. Rage, long buried beneath survival, erupted inside her. She slammed her truck door open, hitting the nearest operative square in the chest, and stepped into the pouring rain.

""Get your hands off my property!"" Clara shouted, her voice cutting through the storm.

Inside the diner, Miller turned slightly at the commotion. In that split second of distraction, Jax lunged forward, slamming the steel tire iron onto the counter with an explosive crack that shattered the glass pastry dome.

""Nobody touches that woman,"" Jax roared, stepping between Miller and the door. ""And nobody touches this boy.""
