Chapter 1 - The Shattered Gala

The crystal chandeliers of the Vance estate hummed with the high-strung tension of high society. Underneath the gilded crown moldings, hundreds of elite guests stood frozen in stunned silence, champagne glasses paused mid-air.

Julian Vance did not flinch. His hand, warm and unyielding, remained pressed softly against Clara’s tear-stained cheek. Clara, clutching the pale linen of her maid’s apron over her lower abdomen, trembled violently. Every breath she drew tasted of humiliation, lavender floor polish, and fear.

Standing opposite them was Victoria Sterling. Her burgundy silk cowl-neck gown caught the glow of the marble fireplace, shimmering like spilled wine. Her hand remained raised, fingers trembling with venom.

"Tell them the truth, Victoria," Julian repeated, his voice carrying an icy resonance that sliced through the room. "She didn't betray me. You were the one."

"Julian, you’re making a horrific mistake!" Victoria spat, forcing a shrill laugh that rang hollow against the vaulted ceilings. Her eyes darted toward the crowd, seeking allies among the board members and socialites. "She is a hired domestic! A thief who crept into your private quarters while you were recovering! And now she claims your heir? She fabricated the medical records!"

"The medical records," Julian said quietly, stepping forward and tucking Clara firmly behind his shoulder, "did not come from St. Jude’s clinic. They came from my personal physician. And the tracking security logs from the south terrace—the ones erased three nights ago—were mirrored on the cloud backup."

Victoria’s painted lips parted. A pale shadow replaced the fury on her face.

Julian turned to the security chief waiting near the double mahogany doors. "Escort Miss Sterling from the grounds. Her family’s association with Vance Enterprises will be reviewed by the board at sunrise."

Clara swayed on her feet, dizzy from the sudden drop in adrenaline. Julian caught her waist before she could touch the marble. Without a word to the gasping onlookers, he lifted her into his arms, carrying her away from the flashbulbs and whisperers, into the quiet darkness of the east wing.
