Chapter 2 - The Whispers in the East Wing

The private library of the east wing smelled of aged oak, leather bindings, and calming chamomile. Julian gently set Clara down on the deep velvet sofa. His tuxedo jacket was cast aside, sleeves rolled up, revealing the lean, corded muscle of a man who worked twice as hard as his pedigree demanded.
"Drink this," he murmured, handing her a warm porcelain cup.
Clara couldn't look him in the eye. She kept her fingers knotted tightly around the hem of her apron. "Mr. Vance... you shouldn't have done that. The scandal... your family's name..."
"To hell with the name, Clara," Julian answered, pulling an armchair close and sitting down so his eyes were level with hers. "For six months, I let Victoria orchestrate my life because I thought it was what my grandfather’s will demanded. But I never forgot that stormy night at the lakeside pavilion. I never forgot who stayed beside me when the fever spiked and the feverish delusions almost took my mind."
Tears spilled over Clara's eyelashes. "She threatened my brother’s medical trust. She said if I ever told you that it was me in the pavilion—that it wasn't her—she would cut the funding for Leo's kidney treatments."
Julian’s eyes darkened with raw grief and anger. "She used an eight-year-old child to blackmail you."

"I had nothing else to protect him with," she whispered, her voice cracking. "And then... when the clinic confirmed the pregnancy... I wanted to disappear. I never wanted to ruin you."
Julian leaned forward, his hands enveloping hers with absolute reverence. "You didn't ruin me, Clara. You’re the only real thing that ever happened to this house."
