Chapter 10 - The Fire and the Tide

There was no time to wait for bureaucratic warrants. Terminal 4 was already blanketed in thick, acrid smoke by the time Luciano’s motorcade arrived at the waterfront. The mercenaries had ignited the perimeter dry-storage warehouses, and flames were leaping across the narrow alleyways toward the residential tenements where dock families slept.
"Evacuate the children first!" Elena ordered the guards, leaping out of the car before Luciano could stop her. She grabbed heavy wool blankets from the trunk, soaking them in the bay water of the hydrants.
Luciano did not reprimand her; he adapted instantly. "Alpha team, secure the water valves! Bravo team, form a human chain to the northern stairwells! Move!"
For three frantic hours, the docks became a battlefield of mercy. Luciano kicked down burning doors, carrying elderly residents down collapsing staircases, while Elena led children and mothers out toward the safe, open concrete piers.
When a localized gas explosion trapped four young dock apprentices on the third-floor balcony of an old repair garage, Luciano climbed a burning fire escape ladder himself. He hoisted the boys down one by one into the waiting arms of his men. As the last boy jumped, the rusty metal supports snapped beneath Luciano’s weight, dropping him fifteen feet onto the concrete below.
"Luciano!" Elena screamed, running through the falling embers.
She threw herself onto the ground beside him. He was covered in soot, coughing blood from smoke inhalation, his arm visibly fractured. But as he opened his eyes and saw Elena safely kneeling above him, he managed a faint, blackened smile.
"Did we... get them all out?" he whispered hoarsely.
May you like
"Every single one," Elena cried, wiping tears from her soot-stained cheeks. "The fire is contained. You did it, Luciano. You saved them."
The dockworkers and their families encircled them, forming a protective, weeping wall around the injured billionaire and his fearless wife. The sirens of the fire brigade wailed in the distance, but tonight, the true guardians had already won the ground.
