Chapter 14 - The Vow of the Open Sea

One year after the night in the marble foyer, a private sailboat drifted quietly along the azure waters of the Amalfi coast. There were no armed guards on board, no radio transceivers monitoring syndicate frequencies, no bodyguards scanning the horizon with binoculars. There was only the gentle slap of water against the white hull and the clean Mediterranean wind filling the sails.
Elena stood at the bow, looking out at the dramatic cliffs rising from the sparkling sea. Luciano stepped behind her, wrapping his arms around her waist, resting his chin lightly on her shoulder.
"Do you remember that small parish on the cliffs above?" Luciano asked, pointing toward a tiny white stone chapel perched high above the cove.
"How could I forget?" Elena smiled, turning in his arms. "You were wearing a borrowed dark suit, and I had white ribbons in my hair. We signed our names in an empty room with only Dante as our witness, knowing that if anyone found out, we might not live to see the next sunset."
Luciano reached into his pocket and drew out a small velvet box. Inside rested two simple, perfectly unadorned gold bands, melted down from the original wedding coins her parents had exchanged four decades earlier.
"We married in the shadows to survive," Luciano said, taking her left hand with reverent tenderness. "Now, I want to marry you in the light, because I cannot live without you. Will you renew these vows with me, Elena? Not for protection, not for an empire, but for love alone?"

Tears of pure, uncomplicated joy spilled down Elena’s cheeks as she smiled up at him. "I will, Luciano. In the dark and in the light, until the end of my days."
He slid the warm gold ring onto her finger, and she took the matching band, sliding it onto his hand. Under the boundless, open canopy of the sky, where no walls could contain them and no enemies could reach them, their lips met in a slow, deep kiss that washed away every memory of grief, fear, and servitude.
