Chapter 8 - The Oath in the Tunnel

The subterranean air smelled of rusted iron, sea brine, and centuries-old limestone. The distant rumble of the burning warehouse vibrated through the stone ceiling above them, but here, ten feet beneath the earth, they were safe from immediate pursuit.
Luciano pulled out a small tactical flashlight, illuminating Elena’s face. She had a light scrape along her temple and soot smudged across her cheek, but her eyes were steady, showing no panic.
"Are you hurt?" Luciano asked, his voice strained with an intensity she had never heard before. He ran his hands along her arms and shoulders, checking for injuries with desperate precision.
"I’m fine, Luciano. Only bruised," she whispered, catching his hands. His palms were shaking slightly—not from fear of death, but from the horror of almost losing her.
"I should have sent you away," he muttered harshly, his jaw clenching in self-reproach. "To Switzerland, to London... anywhere away from this blood-soaked mud. I brought you into the line of fire."
Elena leaned forward, cupping his face in both of her hands, forcing him to meet her gaze in the pale beam of light. "Listen to me, Luciano Moretti. When my father died, I had nothing left but an old book and an empty apartment. You gave me sanctuary, but more than that, you gave me purpose. You gave me respect when everyone else saw a helpless orphan. I am not a civilian caught in your war. I am your wife. Where you walk, I walk."
Luciano pulled her into his arms, burying his face into the curve of her neck. The ruthless king of the docks, the man whom city magistrates feared and syndicates dared not cross, held her as if she were the only real thing in an illusionary world.
"Before God and this stone," Luciano whispered against her ear, "I swear that once this feud is settled, I will dismantle every illegal enterprise my family ever touched. We will turn every port legitimate. We will build hospitals, schools, and honest commerce. I will give you a world you don't have to hide from."

"I hold you to that oath," Elena replied softly, kissing his bruised cheek.
Together, using the flashlight beam, they began their slow walk along the seawall tunnel toward the northern docks where loyal allies were waiting.
