Chapter 4 - Porcelain Masks and Spilled Wine

The board meeting had ended in a tense, unwilling truce, but high society did not fight with ledgers alone; it fought with social ostracization and poison disguised as champagne. Two weeks later, the annual St. Jude Children’s Charity Gala was held at the Metropolitan Conservatory. Attendance was non-negotiable for anyone operating legitimate business in the city, and Luciano refused to let Elena remain hidden behind closed gates.

The conservatory was an opulent glass greenhouse filled with blooming white orchids, string quartets, and hundreds of the city's elite wrapped in designer couture. As Luciano and Elena stepped onto the red carpet, dozens of camera flashes burst in rhythmic explosions. Elena wore an emerald velvet gown with long sleeves and an open back—striking, dignified, and deliberately devoid of excessive ostentation.

Victoria Valenti was waiting near the grand ice sculpture in the central courtyard. Flanked by three society matrons, she held a glass of vintage champagne, her eyes tracking Elena with feline malice.

"How quaint," Victoria murmured loudly enough to silence the surrounding chatter. "It seems anyone can purchase good tailoring nowadays. Tell me, Mrs. Moretti... does the smell of bleach ever truly wash out of the skin?"

A hushed murmur rippled through the gathering. Elena felt a cold knot tighten in her throat, but when she glanced up, Luciano’s eyes held no embarrassment—only infinite patience and profound trust in her.

Elena stepped forward smoothly, lifting her chin. "Bleach washes clean with water, Victoria. But blood, greed, and unpaid debts to the families whose livelihoods your family ruined remain on the hands forever."

Victoria’s jaw tightened, her cheeks flushing beneath her immaculate makeup. "You arrogant little commoner. You think holding a ring makes you his equal? You are a convenience. A tax exemption. A shadow he keeps around out of pity."

"I am the woman he trusted with his life when every wolf in this room was waiting for him to bleed," Elena replied in a quiet, measured voice that commanded the entire salon. "I served this city's workers with my hands. I am not ashamed of honest labor. But you... you have never worked a single hour in your life, yet you feel entitled to rule over everyone who does. That is not royalty, Victoria. That is just hollow vanity."

Victoria raised her hand, champagne splashing over the rim of her crystal flute, intent on throwing the liquid across Elena's face. But Luciano caught Victoria’s wrist mid-air with effortless precision. His grip was not brutal, yet it was completely unyielding.

"Remember my words in the foyer, Victoria," Luciano whispered, his voice like iron sliding against stone. "Touch my wife, and you will find your family’s legacy reduced to ashes before dawn. Step aside."

He released her wrist with deliberate care. Victoria stood humiliated amidst her circle, while Luciano offered his arm to Elena, guiding her toward the conservatory gardens beneath the quiet gaze of the stars.
