Chapter 6 - The Breadline at the Docks

By morning, rumors of Elena's confrontation with Victoria had reached the docklands where thousands of port laborers gathered for work assignments. The Valenti family, furious at their humiliation, had initiated a sudden logistical blockade: three primary cargo terminals were shut down under the guise of an "administrative audit," leaving over two thousand dockworkers without their daily wages.
Luciano mobilized his security teams to bypass the roadblocks, but Elena knew that brute force would only give the Valentis an excuse to involve corrupt state officials.
"We fight with food, not firearms," Elena told Luciano over breakfast.
By noon, three massive transport trucks loaded with sacks of flour, rice, fresh produce, and winter blankets pulled directly into the public square outside Terminal 4. Elena stepped down from the cabin of the lead truck, wearing a heavy wool coat, sturdy leather work boots, and gloves.
The dockworkers, cold and angry, gathered in a wary crowd. Many recognized her immediately.
"It’s Rossi’s girl!" an older stevedore shouted. "They say she’s married to Moretti now!"
"She’s a high-society lady now; what does she care about us?" another called out.
Elena climbed onto the tailgate of the supply truck, using a hand-held megaphone. "My father, Matteo Rossi, spent twenty-five years checking cargo manifests on these very docks! He never left a man without his shift pay, and he never stole a grain of wheat! The Valenti family thinks they can starve you into rebelling against the Moretti line. They want you desperate enough to riot."
The crowd quieted, listening to the clear, impassioned voice of the girl who had grown up among their shipping crates.
"Luciano Moretti and I have authorized the immediate distribution of emergency provisions for every registered port family," Elena continued. "And starting tomorrow, the western private terminals will open double shifts under full union wages. We will not let you be starved for a syndicate’s pride. Form a line!"
For six hours in the freezing wind, Elena stood at the back of the truck, handing down heavy sacks of grain, greeting old friends of her father, and listening to the real struggles of the families who kept the city running. Beside her, stripped of his luxury overcoat, Luciano lifted timber crates and grain sacks side by side with the laborers.

A young dockworker walked up, eyes wide as he accepted a bag of rice from the head of the Moretti family. "Mr. Moretti... you're working the line?"
"I am feeding my people," Luciano said simply, wiping sweat from his brow despite the cold. "My wife showed me where the real foundation of this city lies."
