Chapter 7 - The Shadow on the Highway

The goodwill at the docks sent shockwaves through the city council, dismantling the narrative that Luciano was a tyrannical mob boss exploiting the waterfront. But cornered predators are the most dangerous.

On their drive back to the estate, traveling down the winding coastal highway through dense coastal fog, the lead escort SUV suddenly swerved, its tires shredded by hidden spike strips laid across the asphalt.

"Brace!" the driver yelled as two heavy black pickups struck their armored sedan from the left flank, forcing them off the road and into an abandoned industrial warehouse compound overlooking the sea.

Gunfire shattered the quiet evening. The escort vehicles engaged the attackers, but it was clear this was not an intimidation tactic; it was an assassination squad deployed by Lorenzo Valenti’s private guard.

"Stay down, Elena!" Luciano barked, pulling her beneath the reinforced leather seat while drawing his sidearm.

"Luciano, look!" Elena pointed out the shattered rear window. Three armed men were flanking toward the driver’s blind spot, carrying demolition charges. "They’re trying to breach the fuel tank!"

"We have to abandon the vehicle," Luciano commanded. He kicked open the reinforced door, using it as a temporary shield as he returned fire, neutralizing two advancing gunmen with cold, disciplined precision. "Run for the old turbine room! Go!"

Elena did not freeze. She knew these abandoned port warehouses; her father had taken her here when the shipping company used them for overflow storage years ago. "Follow me! There's an underground maintenance tunnel leading to the seawall!"

Gripping Luciano’s arm, Elena guided him through a maze of rusted machinery and crumbling brick corridors. Luciano laid down covering fire, protecting her with his own body whenever bullets ricocheted off the steel girders.

They reached a heavy iron hatch on the floor. Elena pulled a rusted iron lever, unlocking the rusted seal. "Get down, hurry!"

Luciano fired his last magazine, dropped the slide, and slid into the tunnel just as an explosion tore through the warehouse above, sealing the entrance behind a wall of burning debris. In the pitch-black dampness of the tunnel, both knelt together, covered in soot, breathing heavily in the damp, salt-scented dark.
