Chapter 10 - Confronting the Ghost

Six months into his sentence, Julian Vance received an unexpected visitor at the correctional center. When the metal door buzzed open, he shuffled into the visitor cubicle, expecting his appellate lawyer.
Instead, through the thick glass partition, he saw Clara.
She wore an elegant cream-colored coat, her hair falling naturally around her shoulders. She looked radiant, healthy, and completely free.
Julian dropped into his chair, picking up the receiver with trembling fingers. Clara did the same on her side.
"You came," Julian whispered, searching her face for any trace of the helpless woman he had mocked in Room 402. "Are you here to gloat? To tell me how much you despise me?"
"No, Julian," Clara replied calmly, her voice resonant and steady. "I came to tell you that you no longer exist in our lives."
Julian scoffed nervously. "I am still Leo’s legal—"
"The adoption cancellation went through last Tuesday," she cut in without malice. "Your parental rights were formally terminated on grounds of criminal endangerment. Leo bears only my name. He will grow up knowing kindness, truth, and love—values you could never comprehend."
"Clara, please... you know I cared for you once—"
May you like
"You cared for an opportunity," Clara said simply. "I came here today so that you could see me standing on my own two feet. You tried to paralyze me in that bed, but all you did was show me how resilient I truly am. I forgive you, Julian—not for your sake, but for mine. Because carrying hatred for you would mean letting you keep a piece of my future."
She hung up the receiver, stood up smoothly, and walked away down the corridor, never once glancing back. Julian sat alone, the dial tone buzzing relentlessly in his ear.
