Chapter 4 - The First Tremor

On the fourth morning, sunlight streamed across Clara’s room at the Sterling Private Rehabilitation Wing.
The heavy fog in Clara’s limbs had begun to recede, leaving behind a sharp, pins-and-needles ache that signaled awakening nerves. Marcus sat by the window, reading the morning market reports, while Dr. Aris adjusted the physical therapy frame attached to Clara’s bed.
"Try to curl your fingers, Clara," Dr. Aris encouraged gently. "Small signals first."
Clara focused every ounce of her willpower on her right hand. Her breath grew shallow; beads of sweat formed along her brow. For several agonized seconds, nothing happened. Then, the index finger twitched.
Marcus dropped his papers instantly, standing up and rushing to the bedside. "Clara?"
A second movement followed—her fingers closed into a loose, trembling fist. Clara let out a hoarse, ragged gasp, her vocal cords finally vibrating with genuine sound.
"L-Leo..." she whispered, the syllable raw and fragile.
Dr. Aris wheeled the mobile bassinet closer, lifting the sleeping baby and laying him carefully against Clara’s chest. The mother’s trembling right arm slowly rose, rising an inch off the bedsheet, until her fingertips grazed the baby’s soft cheek.
Leo stirred, turning his face toward her scent and letting out a tiny sigh of comfort.

Tears spilled freely down Clara’s cheeks, washing away the bitter memory of Julian’s mockery. "I am... here," she managed to say, each word a monumental victory over chemical imprisonment. "I am... your mother."
Marcus placed his hand over hers, his own eyes moist. "You are stronger than they ever imagined, my child. The foundation they tried to break was built of stone."
