Chapter 7 - The Trial of Silence

The pretrial hearing drew an army of press to the downtown courthouse. Julian Vance appeared in a drab orange jumpsuit, his hands cuffed to a chain around his waist. Gone were the tailored Italian suits and groomed confidence; his hair was unkempt, his gaze darting nervously across the crowded gallery.

On the witness bench sat Victoria, wearing plain prison garb, her head bowed in disgrace. Having agreed to a plea agreement in exchange for a reduced sentence, she delivered her testimony in a monotone whisper.

"Julian planned everything after Clara announced the pregnancy," Victoria confessed into the microphone, avoiding eye contact with the jury box. "He told me that if we controlled the baby, Marcus Sterling would sign over the voting shares to preserve his daughter’s peace. He gave me the vials to slip into her IV bag."

Murmurs of disgust rippled through the gallery. The judge banged his gavel sharply. "Order in this court."

Julian’s defense attorney tried to argue diminished responsibility due to corporate stress, but the documentation provided by Marcus’s investigators was ironclad: date-stamped emails, encrypted bank transfers, and video logs from the hospital parking lot detailing every covert meeting.

When the judge asked Julian if he had any statement before the trial date was finalized, Julian stood up awkwardly, rattling his chains. He looked toward Marcus, who sat expressionless in the front row.

"Marcus... please," Julian pleaded, his voice cracking with desperation. "I was misguided. I can fix this. Think of what this will do to the family reputation!"

Marcus did not flinch, nor did he blink. He looked at Julian as if looking through empty air, denying the man even the satisfaction of anger. Julian slumped back down, defeated by the absolute absence of pity.
