Chapter 13 - Footsteps on the Sand

By Leo’s third birthday, life at the Sterling estate had settled into a rhythm of peace and purposeful work. To celebrate, Marcus rented a quiet beach cottage along the Atlantic coast, away from boardrooms and city noise.
The ocean breeze carried the clean tang of saltwater across the dunes. Marcus sat on a wooden bench, wrapped in an old woolen cardigan, watching Clara chase Leo near the gentle foam of the incoming tide.
"Catch me, Mommy!" Leo giggled, his small bare feet leaving transient prints in the wet sand.
Clara ran effortlessly, scooping him up in her arms and spinning him around as he erupted into joyful laughter. She looked out toward the endless blue horizon. There was no trace of the chemical limp, no hesitation in her step.
Marcus walked down to join them, his hair ruffled by the sea wind. He handed Leo a smooth sea pebble they had found earlier.
"You did it, Clara," Marcus said, looking at her with quiet admiration. "You built a life out of the wreckage."
