Chapter 1 - Sirens and Shattered Silk

The midday California sun struck the turquoise surface of the pool with blinding cruelty, casting fractured ripples of light across Clara’s limp frame. She lay curled on the freshly manicured turf, the emerald blades staining the torn hem of her champagne-colored slip dress. Crimson trickled from the corner of her swollen mouth, weaving a serpentine path into her blonde hair. Her hands remained rigidly locked over the sharp, terrifying spasm radiating through her eight-month belly. Every breath tasted of copper, panic, and garden soil.
Daniel knelt over her, entirely indifferent to the damp mud ruining his tailored burgundy velvet tuxedo. His hands, usually so steady and detached in boardrooms and courtrooms, trembled visibly as he smoothed Clara’s sweat-soaked bangs from her forehead. ""Look at me, Clara. Keep your eyes on mine,"" he urged, his voice low, vibrating with a terror he had never once exposed to the world. ""Help is already coming. Don't close your eyes.""
Ten feet behind them, Eleanor stood paralyzed in her pristine leopard-print silk blouse, her diamond earrings catching the harsh glare. Her chest heaved beneath manicured hands clutching her throat. Her face, usually sculpted by cosmetic surgeons into an impassive mask of high-society superiority, twisted into grotesque defensive fury. ""Daniel, don't be an idiot!"" she shrieked, taking a jerky, unsteady step forward, her pointed heels digging holes into the turf. ""She threw herself down! I barely tapped her shoulder! The little gold-digger is orchestrating this to humiliate me before the gala! She wants to destroy your father’s campaign!""
Daniel did not turn his head. He didn't blink. With slow, lethal deliberation, he held his black phone against his ear, his jaw flexing until the tendons in his neck looked ready to snap. ""Lapd dispatch,"" he growled into the receiver, each syllable dropping like lead. ""Estate forty-two, Bel-Air Crest. Assault on a heavily pregnant woman. Send emergency surgical trauma units immediately—and dispatch two patrol cars. The assailant is Eleanor Sterling. She is standing right beside me, and she is not leaving this perimeter.""
Eleanor’s mouth fell open, a silent scream caught behind perfectly bleached veneers. The son she had groomed for three decades, the chosen heir to the Sterling real estate dynasty, had just spoken her name to the authorities like she was a common criminal off the boulevard. ""Daniel! I gave you life!"" she howled, her voice cracking into thin air. ""Your father will disown you before sunrise! You would throw away our empire for this peasant?""
Far down the hillside drive, the wail of sirens pierced the quiet valley, bouncing off concrete walls and manicured hedges. Clara let out a choked gasp, her fingers digging through Daniel’s silk lapel, clutching his chest with astonishing strength. Her eyelids fluttered, rolling backward as a deep, suffocating moan tore from her lungs.

""Daniel..."" she gasped, her knuckles turning bone white against his chest. ""Something... something ripped inside.""
Before Daniel could scream for the estate gates to open, his hand slid down over Clara’s abdomen—and when he pulled his palm back, it was dripping with dark, viscous blood.
