Chapter 10 - Shadows in the Ward

While the rain lashed the city, the sixth floor of UCLA Medical Center settled into a tense, artificial stillness. The monitors in Clara’s room beeped in a steady, monotonous cadence: sixty-two beats per minute. Her face remained serene beneath the plastic oxygen mask, her pale skin contrasting sharply with the deep purple bruising across her left temple.

At 4:15 AM, the service elevator at the end of the restricted corridor chimed softly. A woman dressed in standard light blue nursing scrubs and a white protective mask stepped out, carrying a plastic tray filled with intravenous saline bags and sterile syringes. She wore thick rubber-soled shoes that made no sound against the polished floor.

She walked past the nursing station. The night-shift floor nurse was slumped over a clipboard, deep in an exhaustive daze, barely glancing up as the figure walked by. The woman tapped an electronic keycard against the reader beside Clara’s door. The magnetic lock clicked open.

Inside the room, the woman closed the door softly, throwing the manual deadbolt. She approached the side of Clara’s bed, her cold, blue eyes narrowing behind thin wire-rimmed glasses.

She pulled a small, unmarked glass vial of concentrated potassium chloride from her pocket.

""You should have taken the money, little girl,"" Eleanor Sterling whispered, her voice barely a breath beneath her paper mask. She had slipped past the hospital's outer perimeter using a maintenance worker's badge provided by Arthur’s private security firm. ""You thought my son would protect you? Daniel is a child playing with power he cannot comprehend.""

She uncapped the syringe, puncturing the rubber stopper of the vial, and drew ten milliliters of the clear, fatal liquid into the plastic cylinder. Injected directly into the central line port, it would induce sudden, irreversible cardiac arrest within two minutes. An autopsy on a severely traumatized, post-abruption trauma patient would easily chalk it up to delayed hypovolemic shock.

Eleanor reached for the clear plastic port connected to Clara’s neck. Her gloved fingers stabilized the line. She positioned the needle point.

Suddenly, a cold hand clamped over Eleanor's wrist with the crushing pressure of an iron vise.

Eleanor gasped, freezing in terror.

Sitting in the darkened corner behind the medical monitors, shrouded in the shadows of the window curtains, was Marcus Bennett. He had never left the hospital; while Daniel was on the phone with the FBI outside, Marcus had slipped back up the fire escape to stand guard.

""Touch that line,"" Marcus growled, his voice vibrating with absolute venom, ""and I'll drive that needle straight through your eye.""

Eleanor lunged backward, trying to yank her wrist free, but Marcus twisted her arm behind her back, slamming her face-down onto the stainless steel tray table. The syringe clattered to the floor, rolling beneath Clara’s bed.

""Help!"" Eleanor shrieked into the sterile mattress. ""Security! Murder!""

The heavy door was kicked off its latch from the outside. Daniel burst in, followed by two federal agents in dark windbreakers and Dr. Sarah Lin. The room erupted into chaos.
