Chapter 2 - The Red Perimeter

The iron gates of the Sterling estate groaned open as the screaming convoy arrived. Two paramedic cruisers tore up the serpentine driveway, followed closely by two black-and-white squad cars from the West Los Angeles Division. The pristine quiet of Bel-Air shattered under the flashing strobe of red and sapphire emergency lights, reflecting aggressively off the modern floor-to-ceiling glass windows of the mansion.
Paramedics swarmed the lawn, their boots churning the pristine grass into black mud. A female flight paramedic knelt instantly beside Daniel, pressing two fingers to Clara’s carotid pulse while barking numbers into her shoulder radio. ""Maternal shock, systolic under eighty, fetal heart rate decelerating rapidly! We need an emergency C-section protocol at UCLA Medical right now! Pack the pelvis, move!""
Daniel stood up slowly, the world around him reduced to an eerie, muted hum. The front of his burgundy velvet dinner jacket was soaked through with Clara's blood, a terrifying blotch spreading across the fabric like oil. He watched them lift her limp, pale body onto a backboard, securing straps around her shoulders and swollen stomach. Her eyes were partially closed, glazed with the dull sheen of unconsciousness.
""Step aside, sir,"" a medic shouted, but Daniel moved mechanically with the stretcher, refusing to let go of her cold, limp fingers until they forced the gurney into the back of the first ambulance.
Behind him on the lawn, the confrontation turned violent. Two patrol officers stepped toward Eleanor, who had backed herself up against the edge of the infinity pool. ""Keep your filthy hands off me!"" she hissed, brandishing her gold Cartier bracelets like miniature shields. ""Do you know who my husband is? Senator Sterling will have your badges in a incinerator by morning! I live here! I am a victim of a calculated setup!""
""Ma'am, step forward and place your hands behind your back,"" the taller officer commanded, unhooking a pair of steel handcuffs with practiced, clinical indifference. ""You are being detained for felony aggravated assault.""
""Daniel! Tell them!"" Eleanor shrieked, her voice turning into a shrill, manic pitch that carried across the canyon. ""Tell these pigs to stand down! Look at me, Daniel! I am your mother!""
Daniel stopped just at the rear bumper of the ambulance. Slowly, he turned around. The sunlight struck his sharp jaw, illuminating the cold, dead detachment settling behind his hazel eyes. He looked at the woman who had dictated his schooling, his career, his posture, and his every breath since childhood. He did not blink. He did not show rage.
""Officer,"" Daniel said, his voice flat, cutting straight through his mother's shrieks. ""Search her handbag before you put her in the vehicle. Check the recordings on her phone. She staged this confrontation deliberately.""

Eleanor lunged forward, her face turning purple with feral indignation, but the officers pinned her arms backward, snapping the steel rings over her delicate, manicured wrists. As they dragged her toward the police cruiser, the lead detective approached Daniel, his face grim as he held up a small, zip-locked evidence bag retrieved from the pool tiles.
""Mr. Sterling,"" the detective murmured, showing him the contents inside. ""Your wife didn't trip. This brass decorative weight was discarded right beside her head—and it matches your mother's initials.""
