Chapter 4 - The Sound of Survival

The Neonatal Intensive Care Unit was a cavern of muted shadows and rhythmic, mechanical whispers. Incubators stood like miniature glass spaceships in neat rows, illuminated only by soft blue phototherapy lamps and digital displays. Daniel stood before Incubator 7, his broad shoulders hunched, feeling smaller and more powerless than he had ever felt in his life.

Inside the glass chamber, his son lay atop a sterile gel mattress. The boy was impossibly tiny, his translucent skin glowing faint pink under the blue lights. Tubes thinner than spaghetti noodles disappeared down his throat, into his umbilical vein, and through his paper-thin chest. A miniature cuff on his ankle registered a heartbeat that flickered like a candle flame in a draft: 165 beats per minute.

""His name is Leo,"" Daniel whispered against the warm glass, his voice cracking. A single tear escaped his hazel eyes, tracing a path through the dried blood on his cheek. ""You hold on, little man. Your mother fought like hell to bring you this far. Don't you dare quit.""

Behind him, soft footsteps approached. Daniel stiffened, his jaw locking, preparing to confront another hospital bureaucrat or an intrusive Sterling attorney. But when he turned, he met the tired, compassionate gaze of Marcus Bennett, Clara’s older brother. Marcus was a working-class mechanic from Glendale, clad in a faded denim jacket and grease-stained work boots—a man Eleanor Sterling had repeatedly refused to let past the guard shack of the family estate.

Marcus looked at the incubator, his throat working as he fought back tears. Then, his eyes shifted to Daniel’s ruined clothes. ""Is she..."" Marcus couldn't finish the sentence.

""She’s alive,"" Daniel replied, swallowing hard. ""They put her under to protect her brain function. She suffered an abruption and massive internal bleeding. The next forty-eight hours will tell us if there's permanent damage.""

Marcus stepped closer, staring through the incubator glass at his tiny nephew. ""Clara told me yesterday she was scared, Daniel. She called me from the guest house. She said Eleanor came to see her while you were at the downtown office. She said your mother offered her three million dollars to sign a non-disclosure agreement, pack a suitcase, and leave the state forever.""

Daniel felt an icy chill drop straight through his spine. ""What did you say?""

""Clara tore the check in half and threw it in her face,"" Marcus said, his voice shaking with simmering rage. ""She told Eleanor that her child wasn't a transaction. That's why your mother did this. It wasn't an argument that got out of hand. It was retaliation.""

Daniel closed his fists so tightly his knuckles made audible popping sounds. ""She never told me.""

May you like

""Because she wanted to protect you from choosing between your blood and your family,"" Marcus snapped, stepping toe-to-toe with the wealthy heir. ""Well, look around you, Daniel. The choice was made for you. And if you let your family bury this, I swear to God I’ll put my bare hands around your neck.""

Before Daniel could answer, his phone buzzed again. A text flashed on the lock screen from the LAPD detective: Judge signed Eleanor Sterling’s release. Private bail posted ten minutes ago. She’s out.
