Chapter 7 - The Poisoned Well

The realization hit Daniel like a physical blow to the sternum. He leaned against the cold corridor wall, his mind racing through every memory of the past forty-eight hours. Clara had been on strict bed rest for the final month of her high-risk pregnancy. She hadn't left the estate grounds. She hadn't dined out. Every meal, every glass of water, every cup of prenatal herbal tea had been prepared in the main mansion's kitchen.
""Who had access to her meals?"" Daniel asked, his voice shaking with restrained fury.
""We have preserved her blood vials for the police forensic lab,"" Dr. Lin explained. ""Whoever administered it knew exactly what they were doing. The dosage was calculated to cause intense uterine contractions, mimicking natural premature labor. The fall by the pool... it wasn't just an outburst of violence, Daniel. It was designed to mask the fact that the baby was already being forced out.""
Daniel closed his eyes. The memory flashed before him with horrific clarity: Eleanor standing over Clara on the lawn, screaming that she was ruining Arthur’s image. Eleanor hadn't just pushed her in a sudden fit of rage. She had orchestrated an emergency, followed Clara out to the pool, and ensured the trauma looked like a clumsy accident caused by sudden labor pains.
Leaving Dr. Lin, Daniel walked swiftly toward the secure fire stairs. He needed to get to the estate before Arthur’s cleanup crews purged the premises. He dialed Marcus’s number.
""Marcus. Where are you?""
""I’m in the parking structure across from the hospital,"" Marcus answered immediately. ""I saw Arthur’s goons leave. What’s going on?""
""Meet me at the south service entrance. We have twenty minutes to get into the estate before my father's legal team locks down the physical evidence.""
Fifteen minutes later, Daniel slid into the passenger seat of Marcus’s beat-up Ford pickup truck. The engine rumbled loudly as they sped north along the 405 freeway through the torrential downpour. The wipers beat frantically against the windshield, keeping time with Daniel’s hammering pulse.
""What are we looking for?"" Marcus demanded, gripping the steering wheel.
""Clara’s private quarters in the guest pavilion,"" Daniel said, staring straight ahead into the black sheets of rain. ""And the estate's private kitchen logs. My mother employs an executive chef, Henri, who has cooked for the family for fifteen years. Henri prepares Clara's daily nutritional smoothies. If my mother forced him to lace those drinks, Henri will have kept records to protect his own skin. He's paranoid enough to save every text message.""
""And if Henri won't talk?"" Marcus asked, his jaw tight.
""Henri is loyal to my mother because she pays him three hundred thousand a year,"" Daniel said coldly. ""He won't be so loyal when he realizes he's facing twenty years as an accessory to attempted murder.""

As the truck veered off the highway toward the Bel-Air hills, the headlights illuminated the wrought-iron gates of the Sterling compound in the distance. But the gates were already wide open. Three unmarked commercial shredding vans and two private moving trucks were parked along the circular driveway, their cargo doors open to the rain.
The cleanup had already begun.
