Chapter 12 - Awakening in the Glass

Daniel jerked his head up, his eyes widening. ""Doctor!""

Dr. Lin hurried to the bedside, shining a penlight into Clara’s pupils. ""Clara, can you hear me? Clara, don't try to speak. You have an intubation tube in your throat. Squeeze my hand if you understand.""

Clara’s brows furrowed in visible exertion. Her eyelids flickered, slowly parting to reveal glassy, pale blue eyes swimming with confusion and raw agony. Her gaze darted around the ceiling, down to the plastic tube anchored in her mouth, and finally landed on Daniel.

A tear slipped from the corner of her eye, soaking into the white cotton pillowcase. Her chest heaved against the ventilator, fighting the mechanical rhythm in sudden, rising panic. Her free hand moved weakly down toward her flat, bandaged abdomen.

""Clara, look at me,"" Daniel said softly, stepping closer, cupping her cheek with his hand. His thumb gently brushed away her tear. ""Clara, breathe with the machine. Slow down. Our son is alive.""

Clara stopped fighting the ventilator. Her wide, terrified eyes locked onto Daniel's, demanding confirmation.

""His name is Leo,"" Daniel continued, his voice thick with tears he could no longer hold back. ""He was born early, but he’s fighting. He’s in the NICU three floors down. He’s stable, Clara. You saved him. You held on, and he made it.""

Clara let out a muffled, trembling sob behind the plastic tube, closing her eyes in overwhelming relief. She squeezed Daniel’s hand with every ounce of strength remaining in her exhausted body.

Dr. Lin smiled gently, checking the digital readouts. ""Her neurological responses are intact. Brain swelling has resolved. We can begin the extubation protocol in two hours.""

Marcus stepped up to the other side of the bed, resting a heavy, protective hand on his sister’s shoulder. ""Hey, kiddo. You’re safe now. The monsters are locked away.""

Clara looked at her brother, offering a faint, grateful blink. Then, her eyes returned to Daniel, and a shadow of deep, lingering fear crossed her face. She tapped her fingers against Daniel's palm in three distinct rhythms—a signal they had developed years ago when dealing with Arthur's suffocating family functions. It meant: Danger is not over.

Daniel leaned down, pressing his ear close to her lips. Even with the tube in place, Clara summoned a raspy, agonizing whisper from the back of her throat.

""Arthur..."" she mouthed, her lips barely forming the shapes. ""The trust... not just money... Arthur planned... the fire...""

Daniel pulled back, his blood turning to ice. ""What fire, Clara?""

Clara tried to speak again, but the exertion proved too much; her eyes rolled back into a light, natural sleep as the monitors stabilized.

Before Daniel could process her warning, the hospital room’s television—muted in the corner—flashed breaking news with a bright red banner across the bottom: TRAGIC EXPLOSION AT STERLING ESTATE: SENATOR ARTHUR STERLING REPORTED MISSING.
