Chapter 6 - The Lockdown

By 3:00 AM, the ICU hallway on the sixth floor had undergone a chilling transformation. When Daniel walked back from the NICU after spending an hour watching his son’s chest rise and fall beneath the ventilator, he found two burly men in charcoal suits standing directly outside Clara’s private room. They wore earpieces and Sterling Security lapel pins.

Daniel stopped five feet away, his expression hardening. ""Move.""

The larger guard, a former private military contractor named Vance whom Daniel recognized from his father’s downtown headquarters, held up a flat hand. ""I'm sorry, Mr. Sterling. We have strict instructions from Senator Sterling. Access to this patient is restricted pending an internal legal review.""

""She is my wife,"" Daniel said, his voice terrifyingly calm, stepping forward until his chest was inches from Vance’s extended palm. ""I hold her medical power of attorney. I am the sole legal decision-maker for her care. If you do not drop your hand in three seconds, I will break your fingers one by one.""

Vance didn't flinch, but his eyes betrayed a sudden hesitation. He knew Daniel wasn't just a corporate executive; Daniel had spent four years in the Marine Corps reserves before taking his law degree. ""We have a court-ordered conservatorship petition filed by your father’s legal team an hour ago, sir. They are challenging your competency based on emotional distress and conflict of interest regarding the criminal charges against your mother.""

A surge of blind, incandescent fury roared through Daniel’s veins. He grabbed Vance’s wrist, twisting it sharply downward while stepping into the man’s center of gravity. Vance gasped as he was pinned against the wall, but before the second guard could draw a baton, a commanding female voice echoed down the corridor.

""Stand down! Right now!""

Dr. Sarah Lin, the chief of neurotrauma, marched down the hall flanked by two uniformed hospital security officers and an LAPD patrolman. ""This is a sterile intensive care facility, not a private political compound,"" Dr. Lin snapped, glaring at the two corporate guards. ""Your civil petition has not been signed by a presiding judge. Until a valid court order is handed to hospital legal counsel, Mr. Daniel Sterling is the only person permitted in this room. Officers, escort these men off the floor.""

Vance straightened his suit, shooting Daniel a venomous glare before stepping back. ""Your father said to remind you, Daniel: every dollar funding this private room comes from the Sterling Healthcare Foundation. Think carefully about where you sleep tonight.""

The guards retreated toward the elevators under the watchful eye of the LAPD officer. Daniel stood alone with Dr. Lin outside the glass doors. Through the window, Clara lay motionless, hooked to a maze of monitors, an endotracheal tube taping her lips parted, her skin as white as the hospital linens.

""How is she, Doctor?"" Daniel asked, his voice cracking beneath the exhaustion.

Dr. Lin sighed, handing him a digital tablet showing a high-resolution brain scan. ""The intracranial pressure has stabilized, which is positive. But we found something else during her toxicology workup, Mr. Sterling. Something that wasn't caused by the fall.""

Daniel turned his gaze sharply toward the physician. ""What do you mean?""

""Clara had high concentrations of synthetic oxytocin and an unprescribed smooth-muscle relaxant in her blood,"" Dr. Lin said quietly. ""Someone was slipping labor-inducing drugs into her food hours before she fell.""
