Chapter 1 - Shattered Crystal

The chandelier above cast a cruel, glittering light across the dining room of the Vance estate. Shards of crystal goblets littered the Persian rug like freshly broken ice. Julian Vance held four-year-old Leo against his chest, his hands trembling against the child’s ivory lapels. His knuckles were pale, the silver wedding band on his finger digging into the fabric of his tailored trousers.
Across the floor, kneeling amidst the sharp glass, was Emma. Her maid’s uniform was pristine except for the tear across her cuff where she had shielded Leo from the collapsing cart. Her dark eyes, brimming with unshed tears, held a fire Julian had not witnessed in four agonizing years.
""Because... I named him,"" she had whispered.
The words still hung in the heavy air, suffocating the opulence of the room. Julian’s jaw tightened, veins pulsing along the tattoo curling up his neck. ""What did you just say?""
""Julian, please,"" Emma pleaded, her voice barely louder than the hum of the central heating. She raised a cut, bloodied hand, stopping short of reaching out to touch Leo's cheek. ""Don't pretend you didn't hear me.""
Leo shifted in Julian's arms, looking between the two adults with wide, innocent hazel eyes. ""Dad? The nice lady has blood on her hand.""
Julian stood up swiftly, pulling Leo away from her line of sight, shielding the boy with his imposing frame. He signaled two security guards standing stiffly at the archway. ""Take Leo to the west nursery. Now. Lock the doors from the outside.""
""No! Julian, let me see him!"" Emma scrambled forward, glass crunching beneath her knees, drawing sharp gasps of pain as fresh blood stained her white apron.
The guards escorted the boy away, his small voice echoing down the corridor calling for his red toy car. Julian waited until the heavy double doors clicked shut before turning back to Emma. His mask of icy aristocrat composure had shattered, replaced by raw, untamed fury.
""You died,"" Julian growled, stepping toward her until his polished leather shoes touched her knees. ""Four years ago, Saint Jude’s Memorial burnt to the ground. I identified the body. I buried you, Emma.""
Emma slowly rose to her feet, balancing on trembling legs, ignoring the sharp bites of glass beneath her stockings. She looked directly into his eyes, refusing to flinch.

""You buried someone else, Julian,"" she whispered, pulling down the collar of her maid uniform to reveal the matching tattoo along her collarbone—an unbroken infinity band intertwined with thorns. ""Victoria made sure you thought I was dead. And if you think Leo is safe in this house tonight, you are dead wrong.""
Before Julian could answer, the shrill sound of the manor’s silent alarm flared red across the ceiling panels.
