Chapter 9 - The Ghost in the Ledger

Peace did not settle over the Vance estate. The shattered crystal in the dining room had been swept away, but the tension remained, thick and unyielding.

In the master suite, Julian sat on the edge of the bed as Emma gently cleaned the deep lacerations along his back. Her touch was hesitant, carrying the weight of four years of separation.

""You should let a doctor look at this,"" Emma said softly, her fingers tracing the scar tissue near his shoulder blade.

""I only want you near me,"" Julian murmured, turning his head to catch her wrist. He pulled her gently around until she was standing between his knees. He looked up at her, searching her eyes. ""Why didn't you trust me back then, Emma? Before the fire... why did you run?""

Emma closed her eyes, a shadow of profound sorrow crossing her features. ""Because your father told me that if I didn't leave, he would ruin your future. He showed me the contracts. He was going to disinherit you, strip you of your name, and send you to prison on fabricated charges. I thought... I thought I was saving you.""

Julian let out a hollow laugh, shaking his head. ""My father was a monster. He tried to control everything, even from beyond the grave.""

A quiet knock interrupted them. Marcus stood at the door, holding an antique brass safe deposit box covered in dust.

""Sir, we found this hidden beneath the floorboards of Victoria’s private study. It was filed under your father's personal seal.""

Julian took the box, his jaw tightening. Using the heavy silver signet ring he always wore, he pressed the family crest into the lock. The latch clicked open.

Inside lay a single leather-bound journal and an old, faded photograph.

Julian pulled out the photo. His breath hitched. It was a picture of Emma’s mother and Julian’s father, standing together in front of Saint Jude’s hospital thirty years ago, holding an infant.

Tucked behind the photo was a handwritten note from his father: The blood of Vance and Sterling must never mix. To preserve the legacy, one child had to be erased.

Emma gasped, her hand flying to her mouth. ""What did he do, Julian?""
