Chapter 10 - Shadows of the Past

The revelation chilled the room faster than the winter rain outside. Emma grabbed the edges of the ledger, scanning the yellowed pages written in the harsh, sharp scrawl of Julian's late father, Arthur Vance.
""My mother died when I was two,"" Emma whispered, her voice cracking. ""They told me it was a car accident. But this... this ledger says Arthur Vance paid the hospital staff to falsify the records.""
Julian stood up, pacing the expanse of the room, running a hand through his dark hair. ""My father and your mother had a business partnership thirty years ago. Sterling Logistics merged with Vance Shipping. But my father didn't like sharing control.""
""It wasn't just a merger,"" Emma said, pointing to a highlighted line in the ledger. ""It was an affair. Arthur Vance bought her out, and when she threatened to expose him... she vanished.""
Julian stopped, feeling a sick twist in his gut. He looked at Emma, horror washing over him. ""Emma... are you saying...""
""No,"" Emma shook her head quickly, anticipating his horrifying thought. ""My father was David Sterling. The DNA logs in Zurich confirm that. But my mother discovered what Arthur Vance was doing—he was using the shipping lines to launder black market cartel money. When she tried to go to the feds, he silenced her. And he spent the rest of his life watching my family, ensuring we never rose high enough to find the truth.""
""Which is why he panicked when I brought you home five years ago,"" Julian realized, the pieces finally falling into place with terrifying clarity. ""He wasn't angry that you were an orphan without high-society pedigree. He was terrified you would recognize the Vance name in your mother’s old journals.""
Suddenly, the lights in the estate flickered once, then died completely, plunging the mansion into absolute darkness.

The backup generators hummed, but instead of the normal lights, an unfamiliar emergency siren began to pulse outside.
From the hallway, a security guard’s panicked voice shouted: ""Breach at the front gates! It's not Victoria's people! It’s the Moreno cartel!""
