Chapter 4 - The Ghost in the Docks

Fog rolled thick across the Hudson River, cloaking the rusted shipping containers of Terminal 14 in an impenetrable gray haze. A torrential downpour masked the sound of Julian’s black sedan pulling into the shadows behind an abandoned warehouse.
Emma leaned forward, watching the armed sentries patrolling the perimeter with thermal scopes. ""Victoria wouldn't keep him on the ground. She knows you have connections with harbor patrol.""
""She’s using the cargo ship The Valkyrie,"" Julian said, checking the tactical feed on his tablet. ""Registered under a Panamanian shell company. It’s scheduled to clear customs at 0600 hours.""
""That gives us forty minutes before they move him to the lower decks,"" Emma noted, her breathing shallow. She looked down at her hands, still bruised from the glass shards earlier. ""Julian... if something happens to me—""
""Nothing is happening to you,"" Julian cut her off fiercely. His hand reached out, catching hers. His fingers brushed against her rough skin, feeling the steady thrum of her pulse. ""I let you go once because I believed a lie. I am not letting you slip away again.""
She held his gaze for a second, a fleeting ghost of their past passing between them, before nodding. ""Rear ballast tanks. The bilge lines provide access without tripping the deck sensors.""
They moved silently through the freezing rain, slipping past two perimeter guards with practiced efficiency. Julian subdued the first with a silent chokehold, while Emma neutralized the second using a suppressed shot into the guard’s comms pack, knocking him unconscious against the steel railing.
They descended into the belly of The Valkyrie. The smell of diesel and stagnant saltwater was overpowering. Water sloshed around their boots as they navigated the narrow, dimly lit cat-walks.
A muffled cry echoed from a reinforced cabin at the end of the lower hallway.
""Leo,"" Emma gasped, breaking protocol and rushing forward.
""Emma, wait! It’s a choke point!"" Julian hissed, sprinting after her.
Emma kicked the door open, her gun raised. Inside, sitting on a wooden crate, was Leo, clutching his red toy car, tear tracks cutting through the grime on his cheeks. Standing behind him was not Victoria, but a hulking mercenary clad in combat gear, an automatic rifle aimed directly at the door.

""Right on time, Mrs. Vance,"" the man smirked, his finger tightening on the trigger.
Before Julian could raise his weapon, Emma threw herself directly across the line of fire.
