Chapter 11 - The Standoff

The air in the subterranean tunnel thickened with murderous intent. The water rippled around their boots, carrying the faint, metallic scent of the severed finger floating nearby.
""You haven't changed, Valeria,"" Luca said, his voice dropping into a register so cold it made Elena shiver. ""Still picking through the carcasses of men who did the actual work.""
""I survive, Luca. That is the only virtue that matters in our bloodline,"" she replied softly. ""Julian was weak because of love. You are weak because of duty. Both are fatal diseases. Now, hand over the infant. Dr. Aris, step forward.""
Elena gasped as Dr. Aris—the woman who had delivered her baby and guided her through the gunfire—stepped away from Elena without a moment of hesitation. She walked straight toward Valeria, cradling the infant against her chest like a prize piece of luggage.
""Doctor...?"" Elena pleaded, reaching out with trembling, desperate hands. ""Please! No!""
""I took an oath to the Moretti family, child,"" Dr. Aris said, her voice completely detached. ""Valeria is the head of the council now. She pays the salaries.""
""You bought her,"" Luca growled.
""I bought her three months ago, when Mateo first discovered the embryo was missing,"" Valeria smiled triumphant. ""Did you really think you were the only one monitoring the maternity clinic, Luca? You played your part brilliantly. You extracted the boy from Mateo’s clumsy hands and brought him directly to my extraction point. Thank you for doing the heavy lifting.""
Elena looked at Luca, expecting defeat, expecting rage.
Instead, she saw a razor-thin, terrifying grin slowly spread across his blood-smeared face.
""You always were predictable, Valeria,"" Luca said quietly.
Before Valeria could react, Luca clicked the button on the gold fountain pen still tucked securely into his vest pocket.
A high-pitched electrical frequency hummed through the air. The two assault rifles held by Valeria's guards violently ignited in their hands, the lithium-ion batteries powering their specialized smart-optic scopes exploding in a blinding burst of white fire and shrapnel.

The guards screamed, dropping the burning weapons and clutching their blinded, bleeding faces.
In that single, chaotic second of confusion, Elena didn't think. Driven by pure maternal instinct, she threw herself forward through the dirty water, tackling Dr. Aris straight into the stone wall of the tunnel.
