Chapter 3 - The Gilded Cage

The convoy cut through the storm-slicked city streets like predatory sharks through dark water. Elena pressed her forehead against the bulletproof glass, terrified of what lay outside, but even more terrified of the man sitting across from her.

He had not touched her again. Luca sat with his ankles crossed, casually reviewing encrypted messages on a slate-black phone. The gold fountain pen was tucked neatly into his inner pocket. He looked like an executive heading to an early board meeting, not a man who had just orchestrated a bloodbath inside a maternity ward.

""Where are you taking us?"" Elena finally choked out. Her body throbbed with agony; the bruising across her ribs from Mateo's last beating made every shallow breath feel like shattered glass.

""Home,"" Luca replied without looking up.

""I don't have a home.""

""You do now."" He pocketed the device and raised his gaze, the harsh streetlights outside cutting sharp angles across his cheekbones. ""The Moretti compound in the hills. No one enters without my authorization. No one leaves without my escort.""

""A prison,"" she said bitterly.

""A sanctuary,"" he corrected calmly. ""Until you heal. Until the child has an identity Mateo cannot legally erase. Mateo’s family controls the judicial district. The moment you stepped outside that hospital as an unprotected runaway, child services would have seized the baby, and Mateo would have buried you in a shallow trench by the river.""

Elena fell silent. She knew he was telling the truth. Mateo had promised her exactly that while she lay bleeding on the penthouse floor three days ago.

The vehicle slowed, passing through a monstrous set of wrought-iron gates flanked by concrete guardhouses. A sprawling manor carved of dark stone and towering glass emerged from the mist.

As the car rolled to a halt, the rear door was pulled open by a guard. Luca stepped out first, extending his hand. Elena took it tentatively, her knees immediately buckling as her bare feet touched the frigid gravel.

Luca caught her effortlessly against his chest. But as his arm wrapped around her waist to stabilize her, his sleeve rode up, exposing a jagged burn scar across his inner forearm—a scar shaped identically to the iron brand Elena’s own late father had carried until the day he died.
