Chapter 12 - A Mother's Vengeance

Elena's bruised, battered body screamed in agony as she collided with the older woman, but the adrenaline surging through her veins drowned out the physical pain. She struck Dr. Aris across the cheek with the heel of her palm, wrenching the crying newborn from the traitor’s grasp.
""Bitch!"" Valeria snarled, drawing both Berettas with blinding speed.
Gunfire ripped through the underground tunnel, deafening and brutal. Luca had already closed the distance, his knife deflecting Valeria's right barrel upward just as it fired, the slug ricocheting violently off the ceiling.
They clashed like two feral panthers—brother and sister bound by blood and separated by malice. Valeria fired three rapid shots, but Luca drove his shoulder into her chest, pinning her against the mossy brickwork.
""Elena! The grate behind you!"" Luca shouted over the roar of the scuffle, wrestling for control of Valeria's wrists. ""Go!""
Elena scrambled to her feet, water soaking through her patient gown, clutching her baby tightly against her chest. Ten yards behind her, a rusted drainage grate stood half-open, venting cool, crisp night air from the ocean cliffside.
Dr. Aris lunged at Elena’s ankles from the mud, trying to drag her down.
Elena didn't hesitate. With all the strength remaining in her exhausted legs, she kicked her bare heel directly into the doctor’s nose with a sickening crunch. The older woman collapsed backward into the filthy runoff, groaning in defeat.
Elena pushed through the rusted iron bars, tumbling out onto a narrow gravel ledge high above the crashing Pacific surf.
Rain lashed against her face, cold and purifying. The salt spray tasted like freedom, but the sheer drop beneath her was a hundred feet into jagged, foaming rocks. There was no road. No car. Only a tiny, wet ledge hanging over the abyss.
Behind her, a final gunshot cracked inside the tunnel.
Elena turned, holding her breath, terrified of who would walk through the opening.
A tall shadow emerged. Luca stepped out into the rain, his breath coming in ragged white plumes. He was bleeding from a bullet hole through his shoulder, his knife dripping crimson, his knuckles torn to the bone.
Behind him, inside the tunnel, everything was still.
""Valeria?"" Elena asked, her voice shaking violently in the freezing gale.
""She won't be following us,"" Luca breathed, stumbling forward until his knees gave out, sending him down onto the wet gravel beside her.
He leaned back against the cliff face, his chest heaving, his face pale from blood loss.
""We're trapped,"" Elena wept, looking at the crashing waves below. ""We have nowhere to go.""
Luca reached into his pocket and pulled out a small, waterproof emergency beacon. He cracked the seal, and a blinding amber flare soared into the storm clouds above.

""We aren't trapped,"" he rasped, looking out over the dark ocean. ""Our ride is already here.""
Rising out of the black, churned waters below like a prehistoric leviathan, the sleek, matte-black hull of a submarine breached the surface.
