Chapter 5 - Whispers in the Nursery

The air inside the lavish suite instantly turned sub-zero. Elena felt the blood drain completely from her face.
""What are you saying?"" She scrambled backward toward the headboard, dragging the sheets around herself and the infant defensively. ""This is my baby! I carried him! I gave birth to him three hours ago!""
Luca did not blink. He stood tall against the dim ambient light of the terrace windows, his posture imposing and immoveable.
""Biologically, you carried him, yes,"" Luca said, his voice clinical, almost cruel in its precision. ""Mateo forced an in-vitro transfer while you were hospitalized after your car wreck eight months ago. You were told it was an emergency procedure to save your life.""
""No..."" Elena shook her head frantically, pressing her lips against the baby's soft, downy hair. ""No, you're lying. You're trying to make me go insane so you can take him from me!""
""Look at the baby's left ear, Elena,"" Luca instructed quietly. ""Just behind the lobe.""
With trembling fingers, sobbing under her breath, Elena peeled back the soft white swaddle. She tilted the infant's tiny head toward the bedside lamp. There, etched faint and crimson against the pale skin, was a minuscule vascular birthmark—the shape of an inverted crescent moon.
Elena's stomach plummeted into a bottomless abyss. She had seen that birthmark before. Not on Mateo. Not on herself.
She had seen it on an old, faded portrait hanging in her father’s secret study—a portrait of a woman who vanished thirty years ago, the true matriarch of the Moretti bloodline.
""He isn't Mateo’s son,"" Luca said, taking a slow step toward the bed. ""Mateo’s father spent fifteen years attempting to synthesize a legitimate heir from our family's stolen genetic bank to claim the syndicate’s international trusts. Your father, Julian, died trying to destroy the embryos.""
""He didn't destroy them,"" Elena whispered, horror dawning over her.
""He managed to hide the last viable one in the only place Mateo’s family would never look until it was too late,"" Luca said. ""Inside Mateo's naive, sheltered new bride.""

Before Elena could scream, the suite’s double doors swung open without a knock. An elderly woman dressed in a crisp physician’s coat rushed in, followed by two armed guards carrying medical crates.
""Sir,"" the doctor said urgently, ignoring Elena entirely. ""The perimeter motion sensors on the eastern ridge have been breached. They brought heavy artillery.""
