Chapter 15 - The Ocean of Ash

""Brace!"" Luca roared, throwing his entire body over Elena and the newborn just as the shockwave struck.
The explosion didn't breach the primary pressure hull, but the violent concussive force hurled them across the compartment. Elena’s head struck the bulkhead, stars exploding behind her eyelids, but her arms remained locked like iron bands around the child.
The submarine rolled violently forty-five degrees to the port side, emergency sirens screaming in deafening harmony.
""Hull integrity compromised in the ballast tanks!"" the captain shouted from the bridge. ""Secondary torpedo fired from an unidentified hunter-sub! They tracked our acoustic signature!""
""Blow the ballast!"" Luca ordered, pulling himself to his feet using the overhead handrails, blood pouring freely from his reopened shoulder wound. ""Surface immediately! We can't fight underwater with civilians aboard!""
""If we surface, their support destroyers will shred us with depth charges!"" the captain argued.
""Do it!"" Luca snarled with the terrifying fury of a dying king. ""That’s an order!""
The submarine tilted sharply upward, surging through the ocean depths like a wounded whale breaking for the surface. Elena clutched her baby, whispering desperate prayers against his warm forehead as the metal around them groaned in agony under the immense pressure change.
With a deafening crash, the vessel breached the storm-tossed surface, rolling heavily in the mountainous Pacific waves.
Luca pulled Elena to her feet, dragging her toward the upper conning tower hatch. ""Take the survival pod on the starboard flank. It has an independent beacon that only activates once it hits the Chilean coast.""
""What about you?"" Elena yelled over the roar of the wind and the screech of sirens as the top hatch flew open.
Through the rain-swept darkness outside, three massive black gunboats were closing in, their spotlight beams pinning the submarine like an insect in a web. Mateo's voice boomed over the long-range marine loudspeakers, echoing off the churning waves:
""Luca! Come out and bring my son, or we will sink you to the bottom of the trench!""
Luca turned to Elena. In the flickering red light of the emergency flares, he reached out, his trembling, tattooed hand gently touching the baby's soft cheek for the first and perhaps last time.
""He isn't a weapon,"" Luca said softly to her, his voice carrying the finality of a man who had already accepted his damnation. ""He isn't an heir to a throne of blood. He is just your boy, Elena. Take him and forget my name.""
Before she could speak, Luca shoved her into the survival pod and slammed the hatch shut.
Elena pounded frantically on the thick observation glass as the automated launch sequence engaged. Through the tiny port, she watched Luca step out onto the rain-slicked deck of the submarine, entirely alone.
He unbuttoned his soaked cuffs, rolling them up to reveal the coiled serpent tattoos winding around his forearms. With slow, deliberate calm, he pulled an anti-materiel grenade launcher from the deck locker and raised it toward the approaching gunboats.
The pod ejected violently into the churning foam, plunging into the dark, churning waves.
As the pod soared away from the doomed submarine, a cataclysmic ball of fire erupted into the night sky, illuminating the ocean for miles around. Elena pressed her tear-streaked face against the glass, her heart tearing in two, watching the explosion consume the black fleet.
Silence fell over the water.
Elena pulled her son to her chest in the dark, rocking him as the pod drifted toward an unknown shore.
Then, from the emergency radio console on the pod's dashboard, a faint, rhythmic static hissed to life.
Three slow, distinct taps clicked over the frequency.

""Find the lighthouse... I'm already waiting."""
