Chapter 14 - The Devil's Blood

The metal compartment felt as though it were imploding under thousands of atmospheres of pressure.

Elena stopped breathing. She stared at Luca, her mind spinning frantically backward through the trauma of the past year.

""What did he say?"" Elena's voice was a whisper of absolute horror.

Luca didn't move. He sat like a stone statue carved of sorrow and sin, staring blankly at the encrypted tablet in the captain's hands. The silence stretched between them, heavy and suffocating, punctuated only by the distant hum of the submarine's sonar ping.

""Luca..."" Elena grabbed his good arm, digging her fingernails into the fabric. ""Tell me he is lying! Tell me Mateo is just playing another sick mind game!""

Luca slowly raised his head. For the first time since he walked into the hospital room, there was no calculating arrogance in his slate-gray eyes. There was only an ancient, bottomless guilt.

""When Mateo had you trapped in that house,"" Luca said, his voice barely louder than a ghost's sigh, ""he thought he could break you by stealing your legacy. But Mateo was sterile. He had been since an accident when he was sixteen.""

Tears spilled over Elena's eyelashes. ""Then... the clinic...""

""Julian found out about Mateo’s plans to harvest an embryo from a donor,"" Luca confessed, each word tearing through his throat like glass. ""He came to me. He begged me to replace the donor profile with mine. He knew Mateo would kill you the moment you gave birth to an unrelated child to erase the evidence. Julian believed that if the child carried my blood, my faction of the syndicate would be forced to protect you.""

""You... and me?"" Elena choked, recoiling from him, pressing her back against the curved steel wall of the bulkhead. ""You let them do this to me? Without my knowledge? Without my consent?""

""I refused Julian's plan,"" Luca said, his jaw clenching painfully. ""I swore I would never let our bloodline taint another innocent life. But Julian... Julian went behind my back. He stole a sample from our private medical repository in Geneva. He forged the clinic authorization.""

He bowed his head, staring at his blood-stained knuckles.

""I didn't find out until two days ago,"" Luca continued, his voice trembling slightly. ""When Julian's posthumous safety deposit box was unsealed after his death. That was why I came to the hospital tonight, Elena. Not to claim a syndicate prize. Not to settle a war.""

He looked at the sleeping baby in her arms, a solitary tear cutting a clean path through the soot on his cheek.

""I came to save my son.""

Before Elena could process the catastrophic truth crushing her soul, the vessel shuddered violently with a sickening, metallic screech.

Red hazard sirens began to wail down the corridor, flashing like pulsing veins of blood.

The captain’s voice roared over the intercom: ""Torpedo incoming! Bearing two-seven-zero! Impact in ten seconds!""
