Chapter 1 - The Hollow Vow

The clinical lights of St. Jude Memorial hummed with cold electricity, casting sharp shadows against the linoleum corridor. Elena’s hand shook as Damian’s fingers tightened around her forearm. His grip was warm, commanding, yet anchor-solid amid the suffocating terror radiating from the doorway.

Standing ten paces away was Hector Vance—a towering enforcer of the Mediterranean syndicate Elena’s late brother had owed his life to. Hector’s unbuttoned black shirt revealed brutal ink and old knife wounds, his predator eyes fixated on Elena like an unpaid tab waiting to be collected in blood.

"Your nurse?" Hector’s voice rumbled like grinding stone, taking half a step forward. The heavy soles of his combat boots squeaked against the polished floor.

Damian did not blink. His posture was immovable, a tailored charcoal shield wrapped in quiet, dangerous wealth. "No," Damian stated, his baritone slicing through the silence with lethal finality. "My fiancée."

Elena felt the oxygen leave her lungs. "Your... what?" she managed, the word barely a puff of air against the taut fabric of her royal blue scrubs.

Damian shifted slightly, angling his body to block Hector’s line of sight entirely. Leaning in until his warm breath grazed her ear, his jawline tense with restrained fury, he whispered, "Trust me. Just until we get out of this."

Hector laughed—a short, abrasive bark that carried no mirth. "You're playing dangerous games, Mr. Blackwood. Since when does the reclusive heir to Blackwood Maritime shop for brides in public emergency wards?" Hector crossed his thick arms, the scar over his brow twisting. "Word on the docks was Elena Vance owed three million in collateral for her brother's sinking. Debts like that don't vanish behind a diamond ring."

"She owes nothing," Damian said, stepping forward, dragging Elena gently but firmly behind him. "Her brother’s liabilities are under my jurisdiction now. Take another step toward her, Hector, and you will discover why the Mediterranean Coast Guard answers to my private security fleet."

Hector’s jaw ticked. The corridor grew impossibly colder. A pair of passing resident doctors took one look at the standoff, spun on their heels, and fled toward the nurses’ station.

Elena swallowed hard, her pulse hammering against her ribs. She didn't know Damian Blackwood—not truly. He had arrived at the ER three nights ago with a discreet gunshot graze along his ribs, demanding confidentiality and refusing standard police reports. She had stitched him up in silence, asking no questions, treating his wound with gentle precision. He had watched her with those calculating, amber-flecked eyes the entire time. And now, he was claiming ownership of her life before an assassin.

"A ring speaks louder than threats, Blackwood," Hector sneered, taking his hands out of his pockets. "Show me the proof, or the girl leaves with me tonight."

Without hesitation, Damian reached into the inner breast pocket of his bespoke jacket. When he withdrew his hand, a heavy platinum band set with an emerald-cut sapphire caught the fluorescent glare.

Before Elena could pull back, Damian caught her left hand, sliding the heavy stone onto her ring finger with terrifying purpose. It was an exact fit.

Elena stared in horror. How did he have a ring that fit her finger perfectly?

"Tomorrow morning at nine," Damian announced, his gaze piercing Hector. "My attorneys will wire the debt directly to your syndicate’s offshore vault in Nassau. Under one condition: your boss signs her absolute release."

Hector’s eyes narrowed into slits as he studied the gem gleaming on Elena’s slender hand. "The boss will want to see this love story in person, Blackwood. Expect an invitation to the Gala at the docks this Friday. If she isn't on your arm as your adoring bride... the deal dies, and so does she."

Turning with deliberate slowness, Hector melted down the stairwell, the heavy fire door slamming shut behind him with the force of an executioner’s gavel.

Elena ripped her hand away, trembling violently. "Who are you?" she gasped, clutching her chest. "Why do you have a ring with you? Damian, what have you done?"

Damian slowly buttoned his blazer, his cold mask settling back into place. He looked down at her, devoid of warmth. "I just bought your life, Elena. And now, you belong to the Blackwood estate."

Before she could speak, his phone buzzed. He glanced at the screen, and for a fraction of a second, raw fury cracked his composure. "We need to run," he said, grabbing her wrist. "Hector didn't come alone."
