Chapter 8 - The Crimson Tides

The silence inside the cabin was thicker than the storm outside. The rhythmic, mechanical ticking of the magnetic mine echoed up through the floorboards like a death clock.

"Damian..." Elena whispered, her body frozen in place, afraid that even drawing a deep breath would trigger the pressure plate. "Tell me you know how to disarm this."

Damian was already on his knees, his tactical knife cutting through the carpet beneath her seat to expose the explosive's housing. His hands, usually so steady, were tense. "It's a Castiglione signature device. Dual-trigger. Magnetic adhesion to the hull, and an atmospheric pressure sensor linked to the weight in your seat."

"Which means if I stand up..."

"The boat vaporizes," Damian finished bluntly. He looked up at her, his amber-flecked eyes burning with fierce determination. "I am not going to let you die, Elena. Do you hear me? Look at my face. Keep your eyes on me."

Elena forced her gaze away from the blinking red diode. She looked into Damian’s sculpted face, tracing the sharp angle of his jaw, the faint scar across his temple, and the undeniable terror he was trying to hide for her sake. "Why do you care so much?" she asked softly, tears shimmering in her eyes. "You could have taken that ledger and negotiated your own immunity. Why risk everything for me?"

Damian didn't look up from the bomb's wiring. "Because my mother died because of that family," he confessed, his voice rough with buried pain. "Arthur sacrificed her to cement his alliance with the syndicates thirty years ago. He made her wear that sapphire ring to a peace summit, knowing full well the opposition planned to bomb the venue to send a message. He let her burn to play the grieving widower."

Elena felt a tear slip down her cheek. "Damian..."

"I spent my entire life becoming the devil they feared, just to tear down their kingdom," Damian continued, carefully clipping a blue wire with his blade. "And then I saw you. In that ER, treating the sick and wounded with so much gentle grace, completely untainted by the rot of this world. You were everything I lost. Everything I couldn't protect."

He severed a second wire. The blinking red light slowed, but didn't stop. A digital countdown appeared on the tiny LED screen: 00:45... 00:44...

"The bypass failed," Damian hissed, panic cracking his voice. "The failsafe is active."

"Damian, run!" Elena cried out, reaching out to push him toward the stern. "Jump into the ocean! You have thirty seconds!"

"Shut up!" he roared, grabbing both sides of her face with his hands, his thumbs wiping away her tears. "I don't leave you. Never."

"There's no time!"

"Then we jump together," Damian said with wild madness in his eyes.

"The pressure plate—"

"On my count, I'm throwing you out the side hatch and diving behind you. The blast radius at water level is twenty yards. If we dive deep enough, the shockwave won't rupture our lungs."

00:15... 00:14...

Damian kicked the side hatch open. The freezing Atlantic roared outside.

"Three," Damian counted, gathering her against his chest.

"Two."

May you like

"One!"

Damian hurled Elena into the freezing darkness and leaped behind her. The split second their bodies breached the churning surface of the Atlantic, the interceptor detonated in a cataclysmic ball of orange fire, tearing the night sky apart.
