Chapter 13 - The Secret in the Waves

Three days later, the storm had finally passed, leaving the coastal waters of Maine clear, calm, and shimmering beneath a crisp autumn sun.
Damian stood at the helm of a new luxury yacht, the Sovereign, anchored forty miles off the coast near the coordinates where Leo Vance’s courier ship had gone down. Elena stood beside him, dressed in a warm white trench coat, staring at the gentle swells below.
"Why are we here, Damian?" she asked softly. "The trial against Arthur and Castiglione begins next month. The evidence is secured. Why bring me back to the place where my brother died?"
Damian stepped behind her, wrapping his arms around her waist, resting his chin on her shoulder. "Because Leo didn't die here, Elena."
Elena spun around in his arms, her heart skipping a violent beat. "What did you say?"
Damian pulled a satellite phone from his pocket, dialing an encrypted number. He handed the receiver to her.
Her hands shook so violently she nearly dropped the device. She pressed it to her ear.
"Elena?" a voice whispered over the line—a voice full of warmth, goofy laughter, and familiar childhood affection. "Hey, little sister. Sorry for the theatrics. You know how I hate paperwork."
"Leo!" Elena sobbed, tears instantly streaming down her cheeks as she collapsed against Damian's chest. "Leo! Oh my God, you're alive! You're alive!"
"I had to disappear, El," Leo explained, his voice thick with emotion from a safehouse in New Zealand. "If Castiglione or Arthur knew I was breathing, they never would have stopped hunting you. Damian set up the entire extraction. He staged the ship's sinking, pulled me out of the water with a private submarine, and placed me in witness protection before the smoke even cleared."
Elena looked up at Damian, completely stunned. "You... you knew all along?"
"Leo wanted to tell you," Damian admitted quietly, his thumb wiping away her happy tears. "But you were being watched twenty-four hours a day. If your reaction to his death hadn't been genuine, Hector would have tortured you until he found him. I had to let you believe he was gone until the syndicate was broken."
"You're a maniac," she cried, half-laughing through her sobs into the receiver. "Leo, are you safe? Are you okay?"
"I'm better than okay, El. Damian bought me an organic vineyard outside of Queenstown. I have three dogs and a tractor," Leo chuckled. "And hey... take care of that guy, will you? He moved heaven and earth to keep you safe. He's a keeper, even if he looks like a hitman in a tuxedo."
"I will," Elena promised, laughing through her tears. "I love you, Leo. I'll see you soon."
"I love you, Elena. Be happy."
The call ended. Elena lowered the phone, looking at Damian with an overwhelming mixture of gratitude, awe, and deep, profound affection. "You saved him. You saved my entire world."
"You gave me a world worth saving," Damian replied softly, catching her hands in his. "Elena, when I put this ring on your finger in that hospital corridor, it was a lie to protect your life. But every second I've spent by your side, watching your courage, your grace, your fierce and beautiful heart... it became the only truth that matters to me."
He slowly sank down onto one knee on the wooden deck, holding her left hand, looking up at her with raw, unvarnished devotion.
"Elena Vance, I don't want you as my fake fiancée. I don't want you as my ward, or my liability, or my shadow. I want you as my equal. My partner. My wife. Will you marry me?"
Elena stared down at the man who had risked everything, bled for her, and dismantled an empire just to see her smile.
May you like
"Yes," she whispered, her voice carrying over the ocean breeze. "Yes, Damian. A thousand times yes."
He rose, sweeping her into his arms, spinning her around on the sunlit deck as their laughter echoed over the endless blue sea. When he kissed her, it was no longer a desperate plea for survival, but the sweet, unshakable foundation of a new life.
