Chapter 12 - The Fall of the Dynasty

The tension in the solarium snapped like a high-tension cable.

"Nobody moves!" Damian commanded, his voice booming with authority as Marcus and four Blackwood operatives drew their weapons, creating a Mexican standoff against Castiglione's bodyguards.

Elena didn't hesitate. While the men were locked in their lethal standoff, she stepped boldly into the line of fire, standing directly between Castiglione’s gun and the gasping patriarch.

"Elena, get back!" Damian roared, his heart dropping into his stomach.

"Put the gun down, Castiglione!" Elena demanded, her eyes blazing without a trace of fear. "If you kill Arthur Blackwood in his own home, Damian’s men will butcher you before you reach the front door. You won't leave Switzerland alive."

"I am an old man, signorina," Castiglione sneered, his finger tightening on the trigger. "Honor demands blood for this insult."

"Honor?" Elena laughed, a sound full of cold scorn. "There is no honor among thieves and murderers! You want your money back? You want your family's empire intact? Damian controls the Swiss banking channels now. Kill Arthur, and Damian freezes every euro you have tied to European commerce!"

Castiglione’s eyes flickered toward Damian.

Damian stood immovable, his weapon trained on Castiglione’s forehead. "She's right," Damian said coldly. "Kill him, and you die broke in a Swiss prison cell. Walk away, sign your absolute abdication from all Blackwood shipping routes, and I will release your frozen accounts in Liechtenstein."

Castiglione hesitated, the cold calculus of survival warring with his Sicilian pride. He looked at Arthur, who was gasping for breath, clutching his chest as ventricular fibrillation registered on the heart monitor.

"He's dying anyway," Castiglione spit, slowly lowering his weapon. "He betrayed me, and God is taking his due."

Castiglione signaled his men, backing out of the solarium without another word, leaving his lifelong partnership in ruins.

The moment the doors closed, Arthur collapsed sideways, his face turning an alarming shade of cyanotic gray. His monitors let out a continuous, piercing alarm.

"Cardiac arrest!" Elena yelled, dropping to her knees beside the old tyrant. She ripped open his silk pajama top, checking his carotid artery. "No pulse! Marcus, bring me the automated defibrillator from the security console! Damian, start chest compressions, now!"

Damian stood frozen, staring down at the monster who had murdered his mother, betrayed his trust, and sent assassins to execute him. "Let him die," Damian whispered, his hands clenched into fists. "He deserves it."

"Damian, look at me!" Elena cried out, her hands already pumping rhythmically against Arthur's sternum, cracking brittle ribs to keep the blood flowing to his brain. "If you let him die like this, you let his darkness consume you! You become him! Save him so he can face justice in a court of law! Help me!"

Damian looked at Elena—her desperate, furious, beautiful face refusing to let death win, even for a devil.

With a guttural curse, Damian dropped to his knees, taking over compressions with powerful, tireless strokes. "Pad placement ready!" Marcus yelled, slapping the adhesive pads onto Arthur’s chest.

"Clear!" Elena commanded, pressing the shock button.

Arthur’s body arched violently against the linoleum. The monitor beeped once, twice... then stabilized into a weak, rhythmic sinus rhythm.

Elena slumped back against the glass wall, wiping sweat from her forehead, her chest heaving. Arthur’s eyelids fluttered open, staring up into the face of the woman he had tried to murder.

"Why...?" the old man wheezed, tears of sheer helplessness pooling in his withered eyes.

Elena leaned in, her voice low and uncompromising. "Because unlike you, Mr. Blackwood, my soul was never for sale."

Damian rose to his feet, gesturing to the medical team waiting in the wings. "Take him to the high-security ward at Geneva Cantonal. Place him under federal protective custody."

As the gurney was wheeled away, Damian turned to Elena, offering his hand to pull her up. When she stood, he didn't let go. He pulled her flush against his chest, burying his face in her neck, holding her as if she were the only real thing left in the universe.

"You are incredible," he whispered, his voice thick with emotion.

May you like

"I need a vacation," she murmured into his shoulder, a tired smile touching her lips.

"We have one more stop," Damian said, releasing her slightly, his eyes gleaming with purpose. "Before we can truly be free."
