Chapter 2 - The Steel Enclave

Tires screamed against asphalt as Damian’s matte-black armored SUV tore out of the hospital’s underground bay, hurtling into the torrential city rain. Elena sat rigidly in the passenger seat, her scrubs soaked from the mad dash through the emergency exit. Her hands gripped the leather armrests so tightly her knuckles blanched white.
"You kidnapped me," she said, her voice trembling between outrage and sheer shock. "I have a twelve-hour shift. I have patients who rely on my medication rounds! You can't just drag me into your car and announce to a mafia enforcer that we're getting married!"
Damian kept his eyes glued to the rain-streaked windshield, his powerful hands steering through the slick streets with lethal precision. "If you had stayed in that ward, you would have been shoved into the trunk of a van within ten minutes, Elena. Hector had four men positioned by the ambulance bay. St. Jude Memorial is no longer safe for you."
"Because of my brother!" she cried out, tears of frustration finally welling up. "Leo promised me he was out. He swore he was just working as an engineer on cargo ships!"
"Leo wasn't an engineer," Damian replied, his tone chillingly matter-of-fact. "He was a courier for the Castiglione syndicate. And two weeks ago, a freighter carrying twenty tons of untraceable high-grade alloy sank forty miles off the coast. Leo went down with it—or so the syndicate believes."
Elena froze, the air seizing in her throat. "What do you mean, so they believe? Leo is dead! The coast guard found his life vest!"
Damian glanced at the rearview mirror, checking the blind spots. "A life vest doesn't constitute a corpse. But Hector thinks you know where the manifest was hidden before the ship went down. Until tonight, they were watching you. Tonight, they decided to extract the answers."
"I don't know anything!" she yelled. "I'm an intensive care nurse! I work sixty hours a week trying to pay off student loans and Leo's lingering gambling debts! Look at me—do I look like a criminal mastermind?"
"No," Damian murmured, his voice dipping low, carrying an inexplicable gravity. "You look like someone who has spent her entire life carrying everyone else's sins."
A heavy silence descended inside the vehicle, broken only by the rhythmic thumping of the wipers. Elena looked down at the sapphire on her finger. The stone was exquisite, ancient, framed by intricate platinum scrollwork. "Where did you get this ring, Damian? Why did it fit?"
"It belonged to my mother," he said curtly, shutting down the conversation. "And you will wear it until Hector's employers confirm our status."
The SUV turned off the coastal highway, gliding past towering security gates into an isolated cliffside compound overlooking the roaring black waves of the Atlantic. Reinforced steel gates groaned open, revealing a sprawling modernist mansion of concrete, tinted glass, and razor-sharp architecture. Armed guards in discreet dark suits stepped out from sentry boxes, lowering their weapons upon recognizing Damian’s plates.
Damian brought the vehicle to a halt in the cavernous garage beneath the estate. He killed the engine. In the sudden quiet, Elena could hear the distant roar of thunder crashing against the rocks outside.
"Welcome to Blackwood Manor," Damian said, unbuckling his seatbelt. "From this moment forward, you do not leave the perimeter. You do not make phone calls without my authorization. And whenever there are eyes on us, you will act like you are completely, utterly devoted to me."
Elena unbuckled her belt, glaring at him with defiance. "And if I refuse to play your little house-pet?"
Damian leaned across the console, bridging the gap between them. His presence was overwhelming, smelling of cedarwood, rain, and cold iron. "If you refuse, Elena, I open that front gate and let Hector have you. Is that what you prefer?"
May you like
Before she could spit an answer, a shrill alarm began to wail through the garage rafters, red strobes painting the luxury vehicles in blood-colored light. Damian's phone flashed red with an internal perimeter breach alert.
"They tracked the SUV," Damian hissed, drawing a sleek semi-automatic pistol from beneath his coat. "Stay behind me!"
