Chapter 5 - The Patriarch's Shadow

The revelation hung in the air like a poisoned blade. Damian did not flinch, but Elena saw the sudden, microscopic tightening of his jaw, the deadly stillness that settled over his massive frame.

"Arthur Blackwood," Damian said, the name tasting like ash on his tongue. "My father is eighty years old and bedridden in the family estate in Zurich. He hasn't touched the shipping logs in a decade."

"He hasn't touched the ships, sir, but he still controls the trust," Marcus replied, handing over a secure terminal. "The wire transfer that purchased Dr. Kenneth's loyalty originated from the Banque Privée in Geneva. The authorized signatory was Arthur Blackwood's personal conservator."

Elena stepped forward, forgetting her fear in the face of this family treachery. "Why would your own father send assassins to breach your home?"

"Because Arthur isn't trying to kill me," Damian said coldly, staring out into the storm. "He's trying to eliminate the liability. In my father's world, human trafficking is just an unfortunate line item on a ledger, so long as the dividends keep paying for his life support. Leo's evidence doesn't just destroy the Castigliones. It implicates the Blackwood name in fifty years of state-sponsored corruption."

"So your father wants the manifest destroyed," Elena deduced, the horror dawning on her. "And he thinks I know what's in it."

"He knows you are my vulnerability," Damian said softly, turning back to her.

The words hit Elena like a physical blow. "Vulnerability? Damian, you met me three nights ago when you were bleeding out on an ER gurney!"

Damian stared at her, an enigmatic darkness swirling behind his irises. "Do you truly believe three nights ago was the first time I saw you, Elena?"

A cold prickle traveled up the back of her neck. "What are you talking about?"

"Six months ago, when Leo joined the syndicate's flagship, he made me swear an oath," Damian explained, his voice low and hypnotic. "He said he wouldn't step foot on that vessel unless I personally ensured your safety. I watched you from the shadows, Elena. I watched you walk home from your late shifts. I watched you buy groceries for that stray dog by the subway. I saw how hard you worked, how completely selfless you were in a city that eats people alive."

Elena felt an overwhelming surge of anger mixed with an unsettling, electric shiver. "You were stalking me!"

"I was guarding you," Damian corrected, closing the distance between them until his chest nearly brushed hers. "And the moment I saw you patch my wound with those steady, compassionate hands in that filthy ER, I knew I could never let another man touch a single hair on your head."

Elena tried to step back, but her back met the cold pane of the floor-to-ceiling glass. The rain lashed furiously behind her, framing Damian in a halo of lightning. His presence was intoxicating, a dangerous vortex of power and dark desire that threatened to pull her under.

"You're insane," she whispered, though her voice lacked conviction.

"Perhaps," Damian conceded, his fingers gently tracing the line of her jaw, making her skin ignite. "But I am the only monster standing between you and a shallow grave in the harbor."

Before Elena could answer, the mansion's power grid abruptly failed. The ambient lights died, plunging the master suite into pitch-black darkness, followed immediately by the dull, resonant thrum of backup generators failing to ignite.

In the silence, Marcus's voice hissed urgently over the radio on Damian's chest: "Sir! Main power lines cut from the outside. All communications jammed. Heavy vehicles entering the private driveway—and they are flying the Blackwood family crest."
