Chapter 1 - The Shattered Mirage

Julian’s face drained of color, turning as ashen as the limestone terrace beneath their feet. The phone remained pressed against his ear, trembling against his cheek as his fingers went limp. Across the small expanse of the sunlit patio, Elena stood motionless. Her ivory dress fluttered in the Mediterranean breeze, framing her like a statue carved from diamond and spite.
Beside Julian, Chloe froze. Her glossy lips parted, caught halfway between a smug giggle and raw terror as she realized the woman waving wasn't an admirer, but the legal owner of everything Julian called his life.
Elena ended the call. The sharp, mechanical beep sounded like a gunshot over the distant murmur of waves and jazz music. She took slow, deliberate strides across the terracotta tiles. Her heels clicked with rhythmic precision, each step echoing like a countdown Julian had failed to foresee.
""Shopping with your mother, Julian?"" Elena asked, her voice silky smooth, carrying easily across the hushed terrace. Several patrons at nearby tables averted their eyes, pretending not to watch the unfolding spectacle. ""I didn't realize your mother had taken up platinum dye and sheer satin.""
Julian swallowed hard, his throat clicking dryly. He stood up so abruptly his wrought-iron chair scraped violently against the stone. ""Elena... wait. Let me explain. This isn't—""
""Save your breath, darling. The air here is far too expensive to waste on clumsy lies."" Elena glanced down at the table, taking in the crystal stemware, the vintage Bordeaux, and the gold wristwatch she had gifted him for their fifth anniversary. She smiled—a cold, terrifying curve of red lips.
Chloe pressed herself back against her chair, her hands curling into the edges of the table. ""Look, whoever you are, Julian told me—""
""I don't speak to the staff,"" Elena cut in without looking at her. She reached into her designer handbag, her fingers emerging with a sleek black leather folder. She placed it squarely in the middle of their table, displacing Chloe's wine glass.
Julian’s eyes darted down to the embossed crest on the leather cover. ""What is this?""
Elena tilted her wide-brimmed hat upward, letting the bright afternoon sun illuminate the cold satisfaction in her dark eyes. ""Consider it my counter-offer to your little vacation.""
She turned on her heel, preparing to walk away, when Julian lunged forward, catching her wrist. The instant his skin touched hers, a tall, imposing man in a tailored charcoal suit materialized from the cafe's shaded archway, placing a heavy hand on Julian’s shoulder.

Julian flinched, staring into the stern face of Elena’s personal bodyguard.
""Don't touch me,"" Elena whispered softly, her eyes hardening into flint. ""Open the folder, Julian. Before the press does.""
