Chapter 5 - The Margin Call

Julian pressed the phone tighter against his ear, the sirens around the harbor fading into background static. ""Arthur, calm down. What are you talking about?""
""Calm down?!"" Arthur Vance, his father-in-law's oldest ally and the chairman of the investment board, sounded like a man having a stroke. ""Elena just held an unannounced press conference from the rooftop of the Grand-Hôtel du Cap-Ferrat. She announced her formal resignation from the board, citing gross financial misconduct by senior executives!""
Julian's knees felt weak. ""She... she resigned?""
""She didn't just resign, you idiot! She dumped thirty-five percent of the voting shares onto the open market and shorted our primary portfolio through three sovereign wealth funds! Every investor is pulling out! The margins are collapsing!""
The breeze suddenly felt icy against Julian's sweat-drenched neck. Elena’s family held the bedrock capital that guaranteed Julian's speculative hedge funds. Without their backing, the credit lines that funded his lavish lifestyle—his townhouses, his art collection, his bespoke wardrobe—were evaporating in real time.
""I can fix this,"" Julian stammered, backing away from the burning pier. ""I have collateral—""
""You have nothing!"" Arthur barked. ""The bank has frozen all joint accounts pending an emergency forensic audit. Your cards are declined, Julian. As of ten minutes ago, the board voted unanimously to strip you of your CEO title. Security is clearing out your Manhattan office as we speak.""
""Arthur, wait! Listen to me—""
The line went dead.
Julian stared at the blank screen, his reflection staring back at him—haggard, disheveled, and pale. A tap on his shoulder made him jump.
He spun around to see Chloe standing there, breathless and flushed. She held two designer luggage bags, her platinum hair whipped messy by the sea wind.
""Julian! What is going on?"" she cried, her voice trembling with hysteria. ""The hotel just locked my suite! They said my room key was deactivated and my credit card didn't go through! Tell me this is a sick joke!""
Julian looked at her—really looked at her—and for the first time, saw the hollow vanity that he had traded his empire for.
""It's not a joke, Chloe,"" he said dully. ""We're ruined.""

Before Chloe could scream, two men in tailored dark suits with French police badges pinned to their lapels walked through the smoke-filled perimeter directly toward them.
""Monsieur Julian Sterling?"" the lead officer asked. ""You need to come with us.""
