Chapter 14 - The Ancestral Sin

Julian stared at the yellowed parchment, his mind reeling. The vault wasn't his corporate contingency account. It was an ancestral legacy account passed down through a blind trust from his grandfather—an account Julian had gained nominal access to upon his marriage to Elena, entirely unaware of its actual contents.
""Beatrice..."" Julian breathed, his voice barely a murmur. ""What is this?""
Lady Beatrice’s hands, which had seemed carved from solid marble, were visibly shaking. She dropped the letter onto the table as if it burned her skin. Her eyes, usually cold and detached, darted wildly between the paper and Julian’s face.
""Julian Sterling the First,"" she whispered, her voice hollow. ""He was my husband's chief surveyor. The man who mapped the oil rights in North Africa that built the Vance empire.""
Julian looked down at the letters. Beneath his grandfather's handwriting were personal photographs: a young Beatrice, radiant and unburdened, laughing on a sun-drenched terrace in Algiers, wrapped in the arms of a handsome young man whose facial structure was an exact mirror image of Julian’s own.
The truth hit Julian with the force of a tidal wave.
His marriage to Elena hadn't been an accident of Manhattan social circles. His elevation into the Vance inner sanctum, his sudden rise from a middle-tier hedge fund manager to the steward of billions—it hadn't been his charm, his looks, or his credentials.
""You knew,"" Julian said, his shock morphing into a cold, sickening realization. ""You always knew.""
""My husband discovered the affair,"" Beatrice said, her voice dropping into a ghostly whisper. ""He had your grandfather destroyed. Bankrupted. Driven into exile and suicide. I spent fifty years believing every trace of our correspondence was burned.""
She looked at Julian, her gaze shifting from disgust to a terrifying, tangled web of guilt and ancient grief. ""When you arrived in New York, looking so much like him... marrying Elena... I thought it was fate allowing me to repay a blood debt. I allowed you into our house to balance the scales.""
Julian let out a bitter, humorless laugh. ""You didn't balance anything. You used me as a living ghost to soothe your guilty conscience! And Elena? Does she know?""
Beatrice looked up sharply, her eyes hardening once more into steel. ""Elena knows only that you are a traitor who embezzled her fortune. She knows nothing of this. And she never will.""
She reached for the letters, intending to sweep them into her coat, but Julian’s hand moved faster. He snatched the stack of letters and the antique journal, holding them tightly against his chest.
For the first time in twelve hours, the leverage was his.
""Take another step toward me,"" Julian snarled at the guards, ""and I will have these scanned and delivered to every tabloid in London and New York by dawn. The great Vance dynasty, built on murder, theft, and a bastard bloodline.""
Beatrice froze. The silent tension in the subterranean vault was thick enough to choke on.

Suddenly, the red emergency sirens began to flash against the walls, bathing the room in a bloody crimson glow. An automated voice boomed across the vault intercom in German, French, and English:
SECURITY BREACH. FEDERAL AUTHORITIES HAVE ENTERED THE FACILITY.
