COLD CHAMPAGNE, BITTER TRUTHS / Chapter 15 / 15

Chapter 15 - The Checkmate Protocol

The mechanical alarm shrieked through the reinforced corridors, drowning out the shouting of the Swiss bank personnel. Heavy iron security grates began slamming down throughout the hallway with deafening metallic crashes.

""Interpol,"" Beatrice’s lead guard said, drawing a suppressed sidearm from his coat. ""They tracked his passport activation at the border.""

""Put that away, you fool!"" Beatrice snapped, her composure instantly returning. ""You cannot shoot your way out of a Swiss federal raid!""

Julian backed toward the far corner of the vault room, clutching the letters to his chest. His heart pounded with feral adrenaline. The federal authorities weren't just coming for Beatrice's family scandal; they were coming with arrest warrants for him. Wire fraud, embezzlement, corporate espionage.

Through the heavy reinforced glass of the vault partition, Julian saw figures in tactical gear entering the main pavilion, led by a woman in an immaculate charcoal power suit and tall heels.

Elena.

She had flown on the private Vance Gulfstream straight from Monaco to Zurich, moving ahead of the authorities like a general directing a tactical siege. Beside her were two Swiss federal magistrates and a U.S. Assistant Attorney.

Elena walked up to the exterior of the vault chamber, her cold gaze cutting through the glass. She looked at Beatrice, then shifted her eyes to Julian, taking in his torn clothes, the ancient papers in his hands, and the wild, cornered look in his eyes.

She lifted a small electronic tablet and pressed a button, opening the two-way intercom into the vault room.

""Hello, Julian,"" Elena’s voice purred through the speaker, crisp, elegant, and chillingly devoid of mercy. ""Grandmother, you really shouldn't have exerted yourself. The private jet was entirely at your disposal.""

Beatrice stood tall, using her cane to steady herself. ""Elena. This is a family matter. Call off these agents.""

""No, Grandmother,"" Elena replied smoothly. ""The Vance family ruled through shadows and secrets. But the empire is mine now. The board voted to name me sole managing trustee thirty minutes ago while you were crossing the Alps.""

Julian stepped closer to the glass, slamming the letters against the transparent partition. ""Look at these, Elena! Look at what your grandmother did to my family! We are bound by blood! You can't put me in a cage without burning your own legacy to ashes!""

Elena glanced down at the papers pressed against the glass. Her face didn't register surprise. She didn't gasp. She didn't flinch.

She merely tilted her head, a terrifyingly serene smile gracing her lips.

""Do you really think I didn't find those letters three months ago, Julian?"" she asked quietly through the intercom. ""Why do you think I chose you out of a thousand eligible men in Manhattan? Why do you think I let you siphon those millions into accounts I secretly controlled?""

Julian’s breath stopped. The entire universe seemed to tilt on its axis.

""You... you knew?"" Julian whispered, the papers slipping from his numb fingers and scattering across the cold floor.

""A debt was owed to the Sterling name,"" Elena said, her dark eyes flashing with absolute, terrifying triumph. ""And today, Julian... it has been paid in full.""

She nodded to the federal magistrates behind her.

The heavy vault door slid open with a mechanical hiss, and the agents flooded inside, their handcuffs glinting under the harsh fluorescent lights."
