Chapter 2 - The Paper Fortress

Julian collapsed back into his seat as the security guard stepped back, hovering like a specter of impending doom. His hand shook uncontrollably as he dragged the black leather folder toward him. Chloe leaned in, her perfume cloying and suffocating in the humid afternoon heat.

""Julian, what is that? Who was that?"" Chloe demanded, her voice shrill and cracked. ""You said you were finalizing the separation papers months ago!""

Julian ignored her, his vision tunneling as he flipped the folder open. The crisp white parchment inside carried the unmistakable header of Vance & Sterling, the most ruthless corporate litigation firm in Manhattan. Beneath the legal header lay a dense sheaf of forensic accounting reports, time-stamped photographs, and offshore bank statements.

Every clandestine weekend was documented. Every wire transfer Julian had diverted from the family trust to lease Chloe's penthouse in Monaco was highlighted in glaring yellow ink.

""She knows,"" Julian breathed, the color completely gone from his lips. ""She knows everything.""

""Julian, answer me!"" Chloe grabbed his arm, her manicured nails digging through his linen shirt. ""What does it mean for us? What about the yacht in Cannes?""

He snapped his head toward her, his aristocratic mask entirely shattered. ""Shut up, Chloe! The yacht isn't mine! Nothing is mine!""

On the last page of the file, beneath a non-disclosure clause that would strip Julian of every penny he had ever inherited or claimed, was a handwritten note in Elena's distinctive, sharp cursive:

You thought you were playing with a trophy wife. You forgot who built the vault.

Julian looked up wildly toward the terrace exit, but Elena had already vanished. His phone buzzed again on the marble table. A new message flashed across the illuminated screen from an unknown number:

May you like

Look across the bay.

Trembling, Julian stood up and looked toward the harbor where the luxury yacht he had leased was anchored. A thick plume of black smoke was billowing into the pristine blue sky.
