Chapter 1 - The Fracture in the Marble

The silence that settled over the grand foyer of the Sterling estate was thick, suffocating, and heavy with the scent of lilies and polished mahogany. Seconds earlier, the air had been torn apart by a scream—a sound so sharp it felt as though it had carved lines into the ivory paint. Now, there was only the ragged, shallow breathing of Claire, trembling within the vise-like embrace of Julian Sterling.

Julian’s knees burned through his trousers against the unforgiving marble. He had caught her, his arms absorbing the violent momentum of her descent from the mezzanine above, but his entire frame rattled from the adrenaline surging through his bloodstream. His heart hammered like a trapped beast beneath his tailored waistcoat.

"Julian..." Claire whimpered, her hands clawing desperately at the soft wool of her dusty-rose sweater dress, clutching the swell of her stomach. "The baby... oh God, Julian, is the baby okay?"

"Breathe, darling. Just breathe," Julian whispered, his voice cracking beneath an uncharacteristic panic. He smoothed back the damp auburn curls clinging to her pale, sweat-streaked forehead. His fingers, adorned with his heavy gold signet ring, brushed against her skin. They were trembling. "I have you. I didn’t let you hit the floor. You’re safe."

Slowly, Julian raised his head. His dark eyes, usually cold and calculating in the corporate boardrooms of Sterling Global, climbed the curving trajectory of the sweeping wrought-iron staircase.

There, perched against the banister on the upper landing, stood Eleanor Sterling.

His mother.

Eleanor’s knuckles were bone-white as she gripped the ornate black rail. Her sculpted blonde hair was immaculate, her plum velvet dress catching the amber glow of the crystal chandelier, but her face was drained of all color. Her mouth was slightly parted, eyes wide with something that flickered between terror and vicious disappointment.

She had not slipped. She had not reached out in an attempt to save Claire. She had shoved her.

Julian’s gaze locked onto his mother’s. The air between them turned to ice. For twenty years, Julian had obeyed Eleanor’s every command, navigating the ruthless family empire under her iron-fisted matriarchy. But looking at her now, with his pregnant wife sobbing in his lap, the loyalty snapped like brittle dry twigs.

"Mother," Julian’s voice echoed across the vaulted ceiling, low and deadly, devoid of warmth.

Eleanor flinched, stepping back into the shadows of the mezzanine hallway. "Julian... it was an accident. She... she lost her balance."

Claire shook her head frantically against Julian’s chest, fresh tears spilling over her eyelashes. "No. No, she looked me right in the eye. She whispered it... she said I would never carry the Sterling heir."

Julian gripped his phone tighter, his jaw clenched so hard his teeth ached. He didn't answer his mother. Instead, he pressed the glowing screen to his ear as the dispatcher’s voice broke through the line.

"911, what is your emergency?"

"Send an ambulance to 44 Sterling Crest immediately," Julian ordered, his tone flat, commanding, yet carrying an edge of desperation. "High-risk pregnancy. A deliberate fall from height."

Upstairs, Eleanor let out a sharp gasp. "Julian! How dare you—"

He didn't wait to hear the rest. He ended the call and tucked the phone away, shifting Claire into his arms to lift her from the cold floor. As he stood, Claire gasped, her hands suddenly stiffening against his collar.

"Julian..." she breathed, her hazel eyes widening in sudden, absolute terror as she looked down at the hem of her knit dress.

Julian looked down. A dark, crimson stain was beginning to bloom against the dusty rose fabric.
